🍬I read Valley of the Dolls in a whirl over these past four days!🍬 I dunno what I was expecting when I started this book (I know a decent amount about Jacqueline Susann’s life but this is my first time reading VOD) but I wasn’t expecting that much BUT. YOU. GUYS. After about 15 pages, I was angry that I was lead to believe that this a “bad book.” I could literally write a whole essay on this (and I might 📝 ), so I’ll try to keep it brief. 🍬🍬🍬 Here it goes: This book is a GEUINE classic! and everything we’ve all been told about what makes classic literature, “literary”, “ the canon”, etc. is utter and complete bullshit 🤷🏾♀️ One thing I also have to note, this book is not light, airy reading. It’s BLEAK, the ending is ANGRY and yet it’s also a thrilling page-turner. That’s a rare combo. Also, though this book was published in 1966 and the story is set in 1945-1965, it feels surprisingly modern and feminist. I’m absolutely enamored with this book and it’s now one of my favorites. I’m going to seek out more of Jacqueline Susann’s work in the upcoming months. 📖🍬 : : #literaryfiction #valleyofthedolls #bookstagram #jacquelinesusann #darkacademia #literary #weekendreading #readersofinstagram #writersofinstagram #wineandbooks #classicliterature #classiclit #literarycannontoomale #pulp https://www.instagram.com/p/CEPq0K7htLD/?igshid=getkfla7rdcf
