Tape #3 - Panic
Eddie: Leith, calm down. What happened?
Leith: We’re fucked. We are so fucked! She wanted unrestricted access to Playcare files! And she took the phone!
Eddie: She?! Are you talking about-?
Leith: Yes! Miss Napier! Yes! She did set up the incident with Mr. Bonner!
Eddie: Okay, but how did that warrant giving her unrestricted access to Playcare files?
Leith: It was the only way to keep her from KILLING ME, Eddie! The moment I confirmed the phone number was hers, she showed her hand! She went the extra mile and made sure I was isolated! Any kind of help was delayed until it was too late! The emergency button under my desk was disabled and the security cameras were down while she was in my office! She thought of everything if we looked into the incident!
Eddie: Really? Why would Playcare files be enough to stop her from killing you?
Leith: I was more preoccupied with saving my hide so I didn’t ask! All I know is she’s some sort of government agent or a hitman, er, hitwoman!
Eddie: Do you know how ridiculous this sounds?
Leith: I don’t care how ridiculous you think it is! I nearly lost my life because you brought me that damn phone! She said something about coming here without a handler, how she’s usually thorough in her line of work, and how I’m one of the very few still living after discovering her handiwork!
Eddie: Stop complaining. You’re alive, aren’t you? And you’ve given her something she apparently has been after. You can relax for now. We just now need to figure out what she’s after-
Leith: No! No more digging! She said the less people know, the safer they are in her “line of work”!
Eddie: We no longer have that luxury if she has access to those files.
Leith: The only thing saving our skin is that Sawyer removed the files having to do with those chosen for the experiments after the Hartmann situation, so there’s no way she could stumble upon anything to do with them.
Eddie: And if she doesn’t find what she’s looking for? Then what? Perhaps it would have been better to have fed her to Boxy-Boo-
Leith: Oh yes, and have a government organization at our door when one of their own has gone missing!
Eddie: We may have one at our door depending on what she does or doesn’t find. Look. What we can glean from this is she is looking for either an orphan or someone who worked within Playcare. The sooner we find out, the sooner we can put all of this to rest. We can clearly see which by monitoring what files are accessed in the system and the timeline she is aiming for.
Leith: Right. Right… And… if it’s an orphan who was chosen for an experiment?
Eddie: There are thousands upon thousands of Playcare files spanning over the last several years that she will need to sift through. We will cross that bridge once we get there, if we get there.
Leith: If is good… But-
Eddie: For now, we play her game and keep her from going any deeper into the facility. We cannot let her delve further than Playcare. You may have to run interference now and then to keep her from doing so. She will most likely continue her charade of being a counselor for the sake of her mission. Only you and I know what she is.
Leith: I… also told her you brought me the phone and considered her a suspect in the Bonner incident…
Eddie: You-! *pauses then sighs hard* Fine. It’s not like I will be the one interacting with her. Make it apparent that you handled the situation. Keep her suspicions low and keep her away from 1222 as well as any other experiment.
**Knock at the door, startling the two men and Leith lets out a high-pitched yelp before clearing his throat**
Leith: I-I mean, come in!
Stella: Mr. Pierre? I would like your advice on something…
Leith: Miss Greyber! Yes! Come in!
Stella: … … … Am I interrupting something? Is this a bad time? You two seem… on edge.
Leith: Not at all! Is something bothering you, Miss Greyber?
Stella: Well, it’s about one of the counselors. Miss Napier? Nothing bad, but it seems some of the children have taken up to having sleep overs in her office the past couple of nights… And it’s upsetting Dr. White when he needs to… well…
Eddie: Perform follow ups.
Stella: Yes, precisely. It started out as the younger new arrivals seeking her out and now the older ones are following. From what Miss Napier reported, they are afraid of the dark and are having nightmares.
Leith: A known side effect Catnap’s red smoke. I take it she’s popular with the kids…
Stella: Oh, she is! The children have taken very well to her in the short time she’s been here and she’s very receptive to them! She’s an absolute angel!
Leith: *under his breath* Yeah… Maybe Lucifer. *grunts from being elbowed by Eddie* I mean, that’s great!
Stella: Isn’t it? Playcare absolutely needs more like her! Though she has some more… questionable methods when it comes to tiring the children out.
Eddie: Which are?
Stella: Well, she gave them all soft squeaky mallets and let them go at each other until they exhaust themselves while she does paperwork.
Leith: That’s… one way to do it.
Eddie: Quite. As for your dilemma, we may need to post more security to make sure the children do not leave their bunks-
Stella: I have tried that already. The guards report that the children don’t even make it to their beds. They immediately go to Miss Napier’s office instead once bedtime is announced. Because she is a counselor, none of the guards have questioned it.
Eddie: Well then. Personally, I would inform Miss Napier that the children need to learn to sleep in their own beds. Surely, she’ll understand that, especially when it comes to getting those lucky enough ready for adoption. Most parents would look for a child who can sleep in their own bed. There's no need to bring up what the scientists do once the children are asleep.
Stella: That’s a wonderful way to approach it! I will bring it up to her right away! Thank you, Mr. Ritterman! Mr. Pierre!
**The door shuts and Leith scoffs**
Leith: Of course, the kids love her. Why wouldn’t they?! Just my damn luck... She even has Stella wrapped around her finger!
Eddie: It's all a facade, you know this. What’s important is you keep Miss Napier from finding out our little secret while she’s here or we will have bigger problems on our hands.
Leith: Right. The sooner her mission is done, the sooner she might leave.
