BIOGRAPHY

Flora Carrow was not known for being particularly popular or well-liked during her time at Hogwarts. When she was observed early on in her schooling, it was usually either for being a member of the Slug Club or for her creepy habit of dressing identically to her twin sister Hestia - usually in all green. During her sixth year, Lord Voldemort took control of the Ministry. He made Flora's aunt and uncle, Alecto and Amycus Carrow, Muggle Studies and Defense Against Dark Arts Professors respectively. Although the Carrows were allegedly at Hogwarts to teach students, their curriculum was twisted. Defense Against the Dark Arts suddenly centered around practicing the Cruciatus Curse on people who had gotten detentions, while Muggle Studies essentially became anti-Muggle propaganda class. The Carrows were also put in charge of disciplining students, and seemed to actually enjoy corporal punishment. Because of their family relations, the Carrow twins were expected to rat out their fellow students and have them abused by their aunt and uncle. Flora and Hestia had no choice but to obey their elders, mostly because they were skilled Legilimens and could tell when the young girls were lying. They watched many of their classmates tortured because of them, leaving deep marks on the young girls' psyches. By the time the Battle of Hogwarts rolled around, Alecto and Amycus Carrow had committed enough misdeeds against underage students to earn them life sentences in Azkaban. While they rotted there for the rest of their lives after the Second Wizarding War, Flora and Hestia were the only members of their family to escape charges - due to the fact that they were not yet of age at the time. When they turned seventeen later that year though, they were left with a family name that had been completely disparaged and with all of their material possessions having been seized by the Ministry of Magic. They found it difficult to gain employment, seeing as so many people their own age had suffered because of their own family. Eventually the twins settled into running a pub called The White Wyvern on Knockturn Alley. For a while, everything seemed to be going well for the sisters. Knockturn Alley was such a sordid place that few stopped to look twice at them, let alone scoff at their family name. That is until Flora took up with a tattoo artist downstairs at Markus Scarrs Indelible Tattoos. It wasn't long until Flora became pregnant, a fact that led to her immediate abandonment by her boyfriend. Flora was devastated, she had been just starting to feel as if she belonged in the world again and now she was pregnant and alone. Her sister refused to abandon her though, remaking the back rooms of the tavern into a home suitable for a baby. Not long after, Flora gave birth to a daughter whom she named Jade in honor of her Hogwarts house and favorite color. Although the Carrow sisters loved each other and Jade dearly, their experience with her father made them more closed off to the rest of the world than ever. They were minimally friendly to their customers, but privately mocked everyone they came into contact with. Scared to have Jade get hurt, they taught her this same sense of fake superiority too. Inexperienced with the world, Jade took to this cruelty even better than her aunts. She jeered at other children and laughed openly at other's misfortune, rarely finding anyone who didn't immediately bore her to tears. Upon arriving at Hogwarts, she was immediately sorted into Slytherin which she took great pride in. Anything else would have been an insult to her family name. However, at Hogwarts Jade also learned how badly her family name had suffered after the war. Other students gave her a wide berth, having heard horror stories about the Carrows from their own parents who had been tortured by them. Jade suddenly found it much more difficult to feel superior to others, who knew so many things about her family that her mother and her aunt had never told her. And so many of them had not grown up in the same hardship that she had. Jade also learned of the many Pureblooded families that had escaped conviction after the war, despite their members being older and knowing much better than her family had. She easily developed a hatred of these other students whose lives had been so much easier than her own, blaming them for her own misfortunes. Truth be told though, there is a part of Jade that wants nothing more than what they have - money, a manor, and a name that hasn't been dragged through the mud. She knows how smart she is, but how difficult it will be to ever amount to anything in this world while living in the dark shadow that Amycus and Alecto left behind. Deep down, Jade knows eventually she'll have to get down off her high horse and let other people in. She just isn't sure how to do it.

CONNECTIONS

✔/✘ Aubrey Flint: Aubrey is one of the few people in the castle Jade can stand, and the only one of her roommates she actually likes. Over the years, Jade has come to consider Aubrey one of her closest friends. Still, she can't help resent that Aubrey got to live a normal life despite her father's actions, while Jade's been condemned thanks to her extended family. ✘ ISLA DAHL: Jade has always been taught that Divination is false magic and that's definitely the case with Isla Dahl. Isla spends most of her time doing romantically inclined tarot card readings for her classmates, instead of prophecizing anything real. Jade tends to trip the other girl in the halls or verbally assualt her, asking if she saw it coming in her crystal ball. ✔ NICK URQUHART: When Jade first met Nick, she assumed he was just a dumb pretty boy like his father. He quickly proved to be an intelligent and devious boy, taking down others without attracting their attention. They've since joined forces to cut others down for their own advancement, particularly those in their own house who are more suspicious of their manipulation. ✔/✘ ZAC BOOT: Zac Boot doesn't run off crying, unlike most of the people that Jade insults. Instead, he seems to enjoy her barbs, smiling at her like an idiot. Sometimes Jade almost finds it cute, but then she remembers what an numbskulled radio jockey Zac is and socks him in the arm instead.
