Billy was my best friend, matter of fact my only friend. I could tolerate him, and he could tolerate me. The friendship started a few days after Billy and Steve had gotten into that god awful fight. We would always hang out in school and outside of it too. Today was just like any other, I would find Billy in my anatomy class and we would work on the lab we were assigned. Except today, Billy wasn’t there waiting for me with a hot coffee in hand as usual. I was met with an empty seat and no hot coffee. Billy never missed school, never. He couldn’t stand to be home, so maybe he went to his favorite spot that he always ran away to. But the strangest part, Steve wasn’t there in class either. My heart sank a bit thinking that maybe they were fist fighting in the locker room.
“Mister, uh. Okay, whatever,” I say to my teacher before running out of the class. “Okay, if I was Billy...I’d go to the quarry,” I run out to the parking lot and hop into the front seat of my grey mustang and speed out of the parking lot. On the way out I see a frantic Steve jogging towards his BMW, I was too focused on Billy to stop to ask if he was alright. I sped past the police station, Hawkins Middle, and the gas station until I finally arrived at the quarry. Slowing down, I approach closer to some picnic tables and I spot Billy hunched over painfully. I park my car next to the stunning blue Camaro and hop out the drivers side.
“Billy! Billy? You alright?” I shout, jogging towards the solemn boy. Billy’s gaze meets mine, his eyes full of tears.
“No. No, I’m not, Y/N,” he whimpers from the picnic table. I take a seat next to him and throw an arm around his shoulder. “I gotta tell you something , alright? I know you’ll judge me and probably hate me, but I have to get this off my chest,” he says sniffling.
“I could never hate you, Billy. Now tell me what it is, B,” I say impatiently.
“Look, I know you can tell I haven't had a date in awhile or even had girl over at my place at some ungodly time in the night, right?” He asks, I nod realizing that this was quite true.
“And…?” I say questioningly, nodding for him to continue. His eyes close shut and his nose scrunches up harshly, tears escaping his eyes.
“What I’m trying to say…is that...I’m–I’m b-bisexual , Y/N,” he says cringing at his own words.
My jaw hangs slightly ajar and I reach out to pull Billy into my chest to hug him, but he flinches when I grip his broad shoulders. “Billy, this changes nothing ya know? I love you regardless what gender you’re attracted to. Nothing could ever change the way I feel about you,” I encourage him, “I love you, B. More than anything in the world, I could care less who or what you’re fucking, you’ll always be my Billy.”
His body shifts towards me and he wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me into a bear hug. “You really don’t hate me? You’re not disgusted with me?” he asks as hot tears spill onto my t-shirt, soaking through it.
“No, Billy. I could never be disgusted with you, you’re a great guy. It doesn’t matter who it what you love, love is love. You deserve to be happy,” I say cupping his cheeks and pecking his forehead in motherly way. Just then, Steve’s BMW pulls in behind Billy’s Camaro. The brunette with the big hair barrels towards Billy. “If you’re here to fight, you can leave, Steve,” I say hopping off the table to come face to face with him.
“Y/N, stop! It’s not like that, I’ve got to tell you one more thing,” Billy says gripping my bicep to keep me from swinging at Steve. Steve stares wide-eyed at Billy and the pair stare into each other's eyes for what feels like an eternity.
“Hiya? I’m still here? What’s going on, B?” I ask worriedly.
“Billy and I, we’re a—um, we’re…” Steve begins but is cut off by Billy’s deep voice.
“I’m dating Steve, Y/N. Yes, the boy’s ass I kicked. But, you have to understand I’m in love with him, Y/N. I took out all my anger and frustrations from home on him. I didn’t understand my feelings for him at first. So, instead of trying to become his friend, I fought my feeling the only way I knew how. Anger and aggression,” Billy says. He walks over to Steve’s side and wraps an arm protectively around Steve’s waist.
“I, I mean, we. We wanted you to be the first to know, I just didn’t think it’d come out this soon,” Steve said looking at the gorgeous curly-haired blond next to him. “I swear I’d never hurt him, I’m in love with him...And that’s why we’re running away together, to California.”
My eyes widen for what feels like the millionth time today as I stare at the new found couple in front of me. “You’re leaving. B-Billy?” I ask as tears fill up my eyes.
“I’m sorry, Y/N. But this is the only way I can feel safe with Steve. Nobody in this shit town would ever except Steve and I, deep down you know that,” Billy said pulling me into another hug, “I hope you understand that.”
“I get it, B. You gotta do what you gotta do for love, I want you to know that I love you, I always will. Please for the love of god, please, keep in touch with me. You know the number to the house phone. I want you to call me the minute you guys make it to Cali, okay?” I said, tears brimming my eyes. Steve nods his head and so does Billy, the pair pulls me into a group hug.
“Y/N? You gonna let go or what?” Billy asks chuckling.
“I’m sorry, I’m just gonna miss your stupid face,” I say poking his nose playfully. “I’m even gonna miss you, Stevey. Man what’s Hawkins gonna do without the king, huh?”
“They’ll just have to settle for the new queen of Hawkins, Y/N. I want you to take over for me, you’ll have the new best record for the keg stand. You’ll run that high school, Y/N,” Steve says chucking and wrapping an arm around my slouched shoulders. “You think you can do that?”
I nod my head slowly and pull Steve into a hug, “I’ll visit you guys as soon as I graduate. When I get the hell outta here, I’m driving straight to California and you guys are gonna tell me all about your adventures and the parties. I want all the details, everything,” I say laughing and smile brightly.
“Y/N, I want you to keep this,” Billy smiles, removing his signature denim jacket from his upper half. “Keep this and remember me always, okay?”
“You don’t have to, B. I’ll remember you boys no matter what,” I mumble as more tears spill from my eyes.
“Take it, loser,” Billy says jokingly.
I slide the fabric over my shoulders and engulf myself in the smell of cheap cologne and cigarettes. Steve jogs over to his car and returns with a Polaroid camera. “We gotta have a picture to remember this holy trinity,” Steve says, pulling the three of us together and snapping two quick pictures. He grabs the photos and shakes them a few times to let them develop properly. “Awe! Look at us!” Steve says, grinning like a child.
“I guess this is it guys. I want you to be safe and call me! As soon as you get there, don’t forget or I swear I’ll drive up there with the speed of light,” I say walking towards Billy’s Camaro where he stuffs Steve’s duffel bag into his trunk.
“I love you, Y/N,” Billy says kissing my temple, “and I’d never forget to call you, mom,” he says mockingly.
“Steve, take care of Billy, he’s all I got left of this shitty town. Take care of my best friend. I fucking love you guys,” I whimper as I watch the two boys get inside the Camaro. They smile and wave at me as I listen to the familiar hum of the car descend into the distance. I look down at the photo in my hands and clutch it to my heart.
“I love you boys.”
