Picture if you will, two people who had grown up together but have both stabbed each other in the back. One abandoned the other to clean up his mess, and the other repaid in kind by killing him. Or thought to have. Until they reunite through a series of raiding, kidnapping, and jail breaking to have a final confrontation.

Jael is angry. He felt robbed of his life due to his former friend's betrayal. He's not a good man, and even though he didn't want to see this through he couldn't let the anger and guilt of his past go enough. He needed to see this man bleed for a second time. And he did, he killed him, officially-- vented his anger, only for the guy to die in his hands anyway, never caring that he robbed him of his daughter's life while it lasted.

The bad guy didn't care. The person who hurt Jael so bad doesn't care, and so all that anger bounces everywhere. It makes Jael numb. There's no glory in murder, and certainly nothing that can unwind the clock and bring back his daughter. He's back to being a shell, because all that guilt made him who he is today. That walking reminder didn't deserve to live, but where is Jael going to direct it all now? Himself? Isn't that familiar... the gateway for his vices.

The NHP in his mech suit, Bakunawa, had been used by the enemy to unlock secret vaults with bio-mech creatures in it, and so they have to fight those, too. It takes a bit, but eventually the creature goes down and Bakunawa has memories of things she can't remember. It fills both of them with dread, this weird amalgamation of emptiness where things feel like it should be but it's just... empty.

But, at least, with everything defeated, they are now in the safety of the ship surrounded by their teammates. He's numb but he's not dead-- what's this? The thing the team had risked their lives over last campaign is finally revealed and--

What do you mean his daughter is alive?

What do you mean she's his teammate, standing in the room with him?

Wasn't she dead?

i love jael/jaeyel's relationship with gender. i love seeing my late middle aged baby girl discover queerness and -slowly- grow comfortable with it for himself. but! because his muse is discovering and questioning, i cannot give him a true label-- and tbh that's probably for the best~
