Far across the dark city, a King’s fraying sanity slipped even further as his men told him over and over that she was nowhere to be found.
Y/n’s dreams were oppositely quiet. She held little thought about the outside world while sleeping soundly in her new haven.
Mingi had been right about her needing rest, though the amount was more than he’d originally guessed because the moment she woke she claimed she wanted to fuck him too. This led to her getting the chance to taste Yunho while Mingi plowed her from behind, the giants now forever wrapped around her little fingers.
The second time she woke satisfied and sore, she found herself between a sleeping Hongjoong and Seonghwa instead. She vaguely recalled Mingi threatening for them to return to the bar to ‘visit’ with the man who tried to shoot them, a gentle reminder that despite how kind they were being to her, they were all dangerous in ways she didn’t get to see.
When she sat up and stretched with a quiet groan, an arm crept around her middle and pulled her back down firmly into the hybrid’s chest. Her indignant huff was silenced as Hongjoong slid closer to her face, his soft kiss persuading her as she melted into Seonghwa’s hold.
“Stay with us a little while longer, sweetheart. Our Tweedles will soon return, and then it may be some time before we see you again.”
His low voice softened her, interlacing her fingers over the back of Seonghwa’s hand, her other lifting to brush through Hongjoong’s tousled hair. She relished the chance to see him so tired and soft, easily agreeing to stay with them as Seonghwa pressed a kiss to the back of her head.
They were gone again the final time she woke, Yunho and Mingi in the room once more. Losing their more refined style, the giants were now dressed all in black, thick pants and jackets for protection against their clawed enemies. Mingi looked up from lacing his boots, sauntering over to sit next to her on the bed.
“Well good evening, sleepy head. Considering your hair, are you well rested?”
Yunho chuckled from across the room as she smiled at them contentedly. Mingi softly patted her hair, trying to tame the wild mess she’d woken up with.
“Well rested, well cuddled, well fucked…it’s quite the bed.”
Mingi’s face split in a dimpled smile at her witty response, scooping her up when she reached for him. He carried her over to where Yunho was digging through the, apparently shared, closet in the room.
“I’m glad you’ve enjoyed your time here with us, pretty. The fun’s over now, though, and it’s time to head into the danger of the city.”
Planting a smooch on the top of her, mostly tamed, hair when he turned around, Yunho handed her a black long sleeve and similar thick pants, turning back a second time to give her a beautiful long hooded coat. It looked about her size and the heavy silk was a shimmering black, stitched embellishments on the collar and edges like liquid gold woven through the fabric. The same thread marked the inside, a shining KHJ stitched down the edge of the lining.
“Yunho…this is gorgeous.”
“It’s one of Hongjoong’s favorite pieces, if not his favorite piece. He told me to have you wear it, but I just know if it gets ruined his whining will never cease.”
“Why would he have me wear it if he’s so afraid of it getting ruined? Aren’t we about to go slink down alleys looking for Chess?”
Mingi chuckled at her words, taking the coat from her as she started to put the other clothes on.
“The owner of this coat is no secret, so to our allies it’s a clue. If you wear it to meet Chess and the others, it may convince them to trust you.”
“Besides getting to wear something like this of Hongjoong’s is in many people’s dreams. But don’t forget who he is, I doubt his favorite coat would be exactly as it seems.”
Y/n ran her fingers along the silk of the coat again, sensing the magic woven into the fabric. Powerful enchantments, a sign that Hongjoong would be protecting her himself even from across the city. She smiled at the thought of him gifting her the coat despite his love for it, comforted that she wouldn’t be completely defenseless once outside of InBetween.
After quickly eating something with the giants, she took a steadying breath and straightened her shoulders
“Alright…off to find Chess. Where do we start looking?”
Pulling on her own boots and throwing the beautiful coat around herself, she felt the reassuring weight of Hongjoong’s magic as it settled over her, turning to the duo where they stood ready near the door.
“Well, his expertise is gathering information and being sneaky, and he’s nearly impossible to track because he can disappear completely.”
“The trick to finding him is to avoid the places he would be hiding, and look for the places he could. And all of the places he could be hiding will lead us deep into the Woods.”
The Woods.
A vast warehouse district on the outskirts of the city torn apart by a disastrous explosion of enchanted fire. The tragedy killed hundreds and was rumored to have been orchestrated by the Red Court when they discovered the city’s politicians were storing their immense riches concealed among the numerous shipping companies.
Now the buildings were abandoned. Lying in ruin, an eerie forest filled with the charred skeletons of their former structures, only the adventurous and the forgotten ever daring to traverse the dark paths. Many of those desperate enough to inhabit the smoky landscape had dangerous or unstable magic, their power adding to the remnant magic clinging to the ruined buildings like ghosts and making the atmosphere dense and frightening.
Luckily for Hongjoong, such a bleak place is exactly where he met his very first ally.
With it’s reputation, the Woods was the perfect place for the fugitive son of a murdered politician to hide from the hoards of werewolves trying to hunt him down.
Being chased down the dark streets soon after he’d learned about the death of his family, Hongjoong’s journey nearly ended before it had even begun; when a streak of golden mist swept towards him…and then past him, solidifying enough to slice the werewolf behind him clean in half.
His heart raced as a man appeared from the mist over the body of his pursuer, the strange sense of the mystery being’s magic tickling Hongjoong’s nose. The aura that surrounded him was what truly enchanted him, their fates intertwined the moment the stranger turned to him with a mischievous glowing smile.
That same glowing smile is what Y/n and the Tweedles were searching for now.
The dark streets were easy to navigate with the two giants, Yunho leading them through hidden passages and narrow alleys as Mingi followed behind her, the two of them using the darkness and the shadows of their size to hide her from any possible onlookers.
As they approached the edge of the Woods, she felt her skin prickle, the hair on her neck standing on end with the feeling of being watched. Sinking back into Mingi’s shadow like they’d told her, her head whipped toward the other end of the street, causing the duo to freeze the moment she moved.
Both of them scanned the area, on high alert from her reaction, Yunho sending a look to Mingi for the short-haired giant to draw her farther back into the shadow of the nearest building. They could feel it too, the tension of something watching and following them, but Yunho knew the feeling of Chess’s presence and that definitely wasn’t who it was.
Knowing they would be hard pressed to see anything in the near darkness, Y/n reached out with her senses the way Hongjoong had taught her, searching for signs of life or other magic nearby.
The giants slowly started moving towards the edge of the Woods again, Yunho only growing more anxious the closer they walked. Gripping Mingi’s arm suddenly, her eyes flared bright red as she gasped at the feeling of at least fifteen werewolves…virtually surrounding them.
“Wait-”-BAM!
Her startled scream was muffled as Mingi engulfed her, shielding her from the sudden outpouring of werewolves from the buildings around them. Yunho’s pained cry echoed off the walls, only his incredibly fast reflex saving him. The giant, now holding his heavily bleeding shoulder, looked around with murder in his eyes for the one that just shot him.
His gaze landed on the black van that appeared from the shadows down the street. The Clubs stepped from the doors as the vehicle stopped, a third wolf laying on the roof of the van, his rifle still trained on Yunho.
Standing taller and making himself appear bigger to shield their path, Yunho seethed as he spoke lowly to Mingi.
“Get her out of here…it will be too hard to stop them all with her near.”
They both started to protest, Yunho’s sharp hiss cutting them off as he turned only his head to see them in his periphery.
“Stop it! You have to go find Chess. Without him and the others…and you, tiny, we’ll never be able to clear up this mess.”
Mingi clenched his fists, biting his tongue too as he resisted the urge to argue. He wanted so badly to step up beside him and face the wolves together, but Y/n stepped forward to argue with him first, and Mingi was forced to hold her back.
“No!…we can’t jus-,”
“Go. This fight will be fun, but to save this city, Alice, you have to run.”
Tears of frustration pricked her eyes as Mingi pulled her behind him again. For a single moment, she had a clear view of the wolves that were ambushing them, her tears morphing to fear under the mask concealing her face.
Minho…Seungmin…Changbin…
With Seungmin’s deadly accuracy with a rifle, there was no way to escape without the risk of being shot. With Minho and Changbin, there was no guarantee of safety even if you did escape, Changbin was much faster than he looked and Minho held the sharpened senses of one who has tracked down and killed many of his enemies.
A cold sweat broke out over her skin as she thought, ‘How did they know they would find me here?’
She gripped Mingi’s arm tighter as he continued to back toward the Woods, still keeping her hidden from sight. He knew the moment he turned to run with her, all hell would break loose on Yunho alone.
Meeting Mingi’s eye when he turned his head, Yunho winked at him, a wry smile promising they would see each other again. Mingi nodded with a scowl, both giants tensing as their bodies synced into a perfected dance of death and survival.
Y/n became acutely aware of the reason the Tweedles had been tasked with her protection. Time seemed to slow as both giant’s chests expanded with the same deep breath.
Faster than a split second, Yunho moved from where he stood near them. Covering the distance to the wolves instantly, he swept aside the first line that stood between him and the members of the Red Court.
Kicking out, his foot connected solidly with the front of the van before Seungmin had even registered that his target was gone. The entire vehicle slid backwards several feet, throwing the Clubs to the side into the street and tossing the sniper back as he scrambled to hold on.
The few seconds it took the startled wolves to retaliate was all Mingi needed. Turning the instant Yunho moved, he scooped her off the ground and held her against his chest as he ran just as quickly towards the Woods. Entering the maze of buildings, Mingi took off into the darkness before anyone saw they were missing.
Minho and Changbin jumped to their feet with a growl as Yunho tore through the wolves that tried to capture him. Blood from his bullet wound splattered across his attackers, his signature finger cuffs now more than merely a style choice. With his face twisted in a snarl, the metal flashed as he used the sharp tips to slash his own marks into the werewolves.
Seungmin no longer had a clear shot of the giant surrounded by so many of their own, cursing internally as he realized the other giant was nowhere to be seen, along with the smaller figure they appeared to be protecting.
“Hey!”
The two older wolves looked up at him, Seungmin pointing towards the shadowy escape route Mingi had vanished down. Growling lowly again in frustration, Minho jerked his chin at Changbin.
“After them. We’ll take care of this one, but find the other, it looked like they were guarding someone important. Seems that tip from Snud wasn’t a lie after all.”
Nodding, the wolf dipped to avoid the body of another as the giant threw him off, trying to stop Changbin as he ran after Mingi, those surrounding him holding Yunho back enough for Changbin to slip into the Woods.
Y/n clung to Mingi as he ran deeper down the scorched streets. Her stomach twisted with the thought of leaving Yunho behind, wishing she would suddenly see him appear behind them because he’d escaped from the wolves.
Stumbling to a halt, Mingi whipped back in the direction they’d come from, the echo of another rifle shot ringing through the air. Frozen in his indecision, Mingi abruptly set her down as he started to head back, her whispered shout making him stop.
“Mingi?! Where are you going? Don't just leave me here, if you’re going back to help him, I’m coming too…”
Mingi shook his head aggressively to clear it and to deny her words. Kneeling and putting his hands on her shoulders, he took a deep breath before pushing her back into the shadows against a charred wall.
“No, tiny…you have to stay here. Actually, you need to keep running. I’m going back to help him and I’ll clear out any wolves that got near or stop any more that might be coming.”
“But-,”
“No ‘buts’, pretty, you have to go. This far into the Woods Chess will find you and when he does, tell him we said ‘hello’.”
He pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head as he stood again, Y/n grabbing his hand as she struggled for words to convince him to come with her.
“Don’t look at me like that, little one. Like Yunho said…run, Alice, run.”
Running. Running again.
Y/n couldn’t deny the few tears that slipped from her eyes and soaked into her mask, her breath ragged as she ran deeper and deeper into the twisted darkness of the Woods. The lingering look Mingi gave her before he ran back to Yunho sent chills down her spine, her heart aching with the hope that she would see them both again soon.
Flattening herself against a wall, she paused to catch her breath. The atmosphere between the buildings was unsettling her even more, a nagging feeling at the back of her mind like she was being followed. Casting her gaze around, nothing out of the ordinary could be seen, but the feeling persisted.
She was barely able to even her breathing before it was stolen from her in fear at the sound of light footsteps. Werewolves? How did they get past Mingi?
Just her heart pounding in her ears was enough to give her away if her pursuer truly was a werewolf. Slowly she crept along the wall, hoping the shadows would be enough to hide her…but no such luck. A terrified gasp was all she could muster as a strong hand grabbed her around the arm, the stocky figure melting from the dark as he pinned her fully to the wall.
Changbin was filled with a bursting sense of achievement, Chan would be so proud to know that he had finally captured their greatest enemy. When they’d received a tip about the possible whereabouts of the White King, they’d all been skeptical. But, seeing the smaller figure the giants protected, and catching a faint scent of the White King mixed with the giant he chased, he moved faster than he ever had to ensure the mysterious man didn’t escape him. Now though, with him pinned to the wall, Changbin noticed the White King was different than he thought he’d be.
His claws cut through the fabric of the coat and sliced into her arm as he drug his prey back toward a spot with enough moonlight to see. Frozen in shock when he ripped off her hood, he revealed he had actually not captured the White King.
“…Y/n? How-…what?”
In a moment of fear, Y/n used his confusion to her advantage. When his grip loosened even slightly, she pulled on Hongjoong’s magic around her and pushed outward with their combined strength, shoving Changbin away from her. He flew into the wall opposite them, the werewolf crumpling breathless to the ground with a strained ‘oof!’.
Shocked by how effective that was, she stood for a moment before shaking her head and turning to run, dodging between the buildings as quietly as she could. It wasn’t enough to knock Changbin out, but it gave her a head-start that even slightly increased her chance of escaping him.
Trying to find any alternate route to get her away from the werewolf, a few wrong turns instead put her in a dead end. Adrenaline and fear coursed through her as she turned back around only to be met with the sound of Changbin’s rapidly approaching footsteps.
Just as she considered attempting to open a rune door, the hair on the back of her neck stood on end, the same nagging feeling of being followed surfacing as a presence surrounded her and the tingle of magic brushed her fingertips. Keeping still, her eyes were the only thing that moved to search around her, glowing once she realized she couldn’t see the presence with her naked eye.
The moment she viewed her surroundings with magic, she was startled and awed by the sight that appeared.
A man. A hybrid? A hybrid with magic?
Piece by piece, the outline of a mysterious figure materialized floating hardly a foot in front of her at the entrance to the alley, his aura a tangible gold mist taking shape around him like he had cat ears and a fluffy banded tail. He seemed to be watching around the corner, observing the werewolf that drew ever closer to where she stood.
When he glanced to check on her, he was surprised to see the pretty fae he’d been following was staring right at him. Tilting his head, he drifted until he was right in front of her face and no matter how much he moved, her eyes still followed him.
Finally Y/n was granted the sight of the over-sized fanged smile she’d heard so much about, accompanied by a delighted and slightly deranged giggle. Just as Changbin came into the entrance of the dead end, Yeosang surrounded her with his magic, the maniacal grin he sent toward the werewolf the only thing left behind as they disappeared into thin air.
The sudden shift in scenery had her clutching her head, dizziness making her sway as a different charred alley came into focus around her. Invisible but solid hands held her steady and helped her pull off her mask to breathe, her eyes glowing to reveal the golden aura of the cat standing directly in front of her.
Yeosang smiled again, letting her go once he was confident she wouldn’t fall. She looked around cautiously for Changbin, silence laying thick and undisturbed around them.
Floating to sit cross-legged in the air, he propped his elbow on his knee and set his chin in his palm as he gazed at her curiously. When he spoke, his soft and deep voice brushed across her senses like velvet.
“My, my, what a curious thing I’ve discovered. You can see me, can’t you? Even when I’m like this?”
Y/n nodded, though truthfully she could only see the shimmering outline of his aura.
“…only with magic. You disappear completely in normal sight.”
His glowing smile grew, splitting beyond a normal mouth size as he twirled happily in the air before settling in front of her again. Slowly, from his head to his feet, he fully solidified until a beautiful man stood before her instead.
In a suit of deep purple silk, he had an angelic face, offset by his slitted glowing eyes and bright green and black hair. His solid appearance was astonishing enough, but overlaying his extravagant look still was his brightly glowing cat-like aura. Her eyes widened as she realized he was a fae and a hybrid; his ears, the striped skin of his chest, and his banded tail were only visible by his choice, and his unsettling smile could only be seen as his aura stretched over his normal lips. His tail curled behind him as he watched her admire him and he made a stunning image against the blackened alley wall.
Lifting his hand to brush one dark claw under her chin, he grinned wider as he asked,
“And in the interest of satisfying my own curiosity, just how long have you known you were a fae…Princess?”
Y/n scowled at his obvious use of the werewolves’ title for her.
“Well you know what they say about curiosity and cats, so I don’t see why you need to know that.”
Chuckling darkly, he slowly started to disappear, until only his eyes and crazed glowing smile remained. Even looking through him, she couldn’t move forward with the solid presence of his body still there. Yeosang murmured his response, the deep sound floating around her head like mist.
“Curiosity has tried to kill me many times, but I still like to know anything I can about my…potential enemies. And you’ve been at the side of this whole city’s enemy for a very long time, haven’t you?”
Tilting her head up, her breath hitched at the feeling of his sharp claws against her throat, not even her magic helping her to see him this time.
“So I suggest you play nice and answer my questions, pet, because the only thing stopping me from killing you now is the scents that cover you.”
“T-then it’s a good thing Hatter gave me his coat when he sent me to find you, isn’t it…Chess?”
Her whispered statement had his claws slowly moving away, the hybrid reappearing and backing her fully against the wall behind her. He slipped his fingers into the collar of her coat, pulling it to the side to show Hongjoong’s monogram on the lining. He knew better than anyone that the enigmatic fae would never part with such a prized piece of his collection without reason. Opening the coat also revealed to him the necklace she wore to hide her own scent, another of Hongjoong’s designs, and the necklace of fading rabbit bites and hickeys she wore as a gift from Seonghwa.
“It seems you’ve collected some rather personal souvenirs, pet. And you came here today protected by those I love, even earning their trust so completely as to have them throw themselves into danger for you. So I’ll grant you my patience and ask nicely once again…how long have you known you were a fae?”
She watched his slitted eyes narrow, warning her to tell him the truth.
“…since I was a child. But it was only recently that I gained the freedom to learn and was allowed to use my power openly.”
“Suppressed by the King, freed by the white rabbit, and taught by Hatter, I presume? That explains how quickly you seem to have grown. What it doesn’t explain is why he told the Tweedles to bring you to find me.”
Y/n shrugged, feigning nonchalance as her aura simmered, reaching out to test the bounds of her magical persuasion.
“Perhaps he thought meeting me would make you change your mind about his request for you to return to Marmoreal.”
A rippling laugh of disbelief left the cat, his body floating in a twist before settling again. Sarcasm dripped from every word as he smiled crookedly.
“Change my mind? With your enchanting little aura? Am I going to fall for your charms like my lovers before me?”
“What would you know of my charms? And if falling for them is what it takes to get you to come back…then yes.”
She could tell he didn’t expect her response, their magic thrumming in the air around them as he pushed his aura back against hers, moving closer to her face with a spark in his eye.
“Many things are whispered into the air of Underland and the very wind carries information. Any knowledge is accessible when one is invisible, with the right timing, or for the right price. I’ve seen and heard of your charm ensnaring werewolves, hybrids, giants, and fae alike,” his aura glowed brighter menacingly as he leaned one arm over her head, “but don’t assume you’ll sway me as easily, pet.”
Her lips parted in unintentional awe at his strength. Hongjoong’s power was intimidating, but the enigma that was Chess’s magic left her speechless, her own aura shrinking again as she was humbled.
“…then what? There must be something I can do…anything, to get you to believe me? To get you to return to Marmoreal?”
Y/n looked at him steadily then, seeing the sharp smirk hide a calculated look as his slitted eyes narrowed farther, cluing her in that she had one foot in the door to convincing him already. Reaching up, she slowly pulled the magic necklace from around her neck, the slightest lift of her chin enough to bare her scent to the hybrid as she lay her truth before him.
“I don’t know what connection or promise you hold with the others, but if nothing else…I need your help. Every ally I can make strengthens my will, and then… perhaps I won’t be so scared to face the Red King again.”
Yeosang’s nostrils flared and his tail curled with the appearance of her scent, the sincerity in her words obvious. Her quiet confession of fear softened him slightly, understanding the desire for a courage and strength that came from knowing one had powerful connections with their allies. Hongjoong had sent him a message about their newest recruit and the pact she’d made with them, but it seems he’d intentionally left out key details for the cat to discover when the time came for them to finally meet. She was stronger than he’d expected, but still rightly feared the difficult task that lay ahead of them.
Finally releasing a resigned sigh, he leaned back and took the necklace from her, looping it around her neck again before he carefully lifted her arm to inspect the bloody scratches through her coat.
“I’m afraid that part I understand…in the beginning, fear is what crippled us all. But through the pacts we’ve formed, we know we have true strength and loyalty behind us. With the villains you’ve run afoul of in your past, and the scars you carry from wicked claws…wanting for those same pacts only makes sense.”
Her eyes widened and her arm tingled as Yeosang healed her, the wounds closing in seconds and leaving only the blood-darkened silk marred with holes. Her awe at his ability to heal faded as she pouted slightly, not eager to return the coat to it’s rightful owner.
“…Hatter’s going to be so upset with me for ruining this.”
That seemed to crack part of Yeosang’s tough exterior, a genuine laugh filling her ears as he floated to sit cross-legged again.
“No he won’t, he wouldn’t have given it to you if he didn’t know there was a chance it would get damaged. Now…if I heard you correctly, you asked if there was anything you could do to convince me to help you, right?”
Y/n tried to keep the knowing smirk off her face as she nodded, the outcome of the rest of their conversation becoming predictable.
“Name it…anything.”
Yeosang licked his lips thoughtfully. He wasn’t an idiot, he knew that her joining their revolution was like the first falling stone that started an avalanche, their steps toward the coming battle against the Red King now impossible to avoid. If he gave in to her, and by association Hongjoong’s, wishes, he knew their next task would be to find the last two outlying members.
Silence stretched between them as she waited for his answer. He’d shifted to be laying on his stomach midair, slowly floating in a circle as his brow creased and his tail curled in thought. Deciding to just accomplish several tasks all at once, he straightened back up and landed on his feet.
“Firstly, I will not use your name where it is unsafe and you dislike the public’s title for you, so what do I call you?”
Y/n was confused for a moment before she understood what he was asking for.
“…Alice.”
“Ah…the Alice? How wonderful. I was curious of what Hatter would decide.”
“And you, Chess? Do I get the chance to learn your true name?”
Yeosang smirked as he leaned closer to her, his eyes glowing as she felt his magic surround her again and the alley began to fade away.
“Of course, pet, but only if you agree to my second condition, and we’ll need somewhere much more private for a conversation like that.”
Dizziness hit her again, Yeosang holding her steady before moving her to sit on the edge of a bed that appeared behind her.
“Why does your magic affect me like this?”
He chuckled at her groan, reaching to gently massage her temples until her eyesight focused again.
“You are new to the world of magic, pet, but you’re not the only one who gets dizzy from evaporating. Hongjoong still gets sick, and I think he’ll hold a little bit of resentment towards me until the day I finally give in and tell him my secrets.”
Y/n huffed a soft laugh at the thought of Hongjoong fuming over the cat gatekeeping his magic abilities.
Looking around, the room they were in now was cozy. A simple bedroom illuminated by a single lamp in the corner, the only indicator of it’s security being the soundproof texture of the walls and thick shades sealed over the window. The safe feeling within the walls was a stark contrast to the terrifying adrenaline-filled chase she’d been in only moments before.
It seemed fairly unassuming until movement caught her attention from the corner of her eye. Turning her head quickly, instead of someone else like she expected, she came face to face with herself in a floor length mirror embedded in the wall at the foot of the bed. Magical in its design, she realized she could see his aura in the reflection even though she couldn’t see it in plain sight.
His reflection stood from in front of her, her head turning to look back up at him as he floated cross-legged in the air once more, the position apparently his go-to.
Before he could speak, she was taken with worry and couldn’t help but ask, “Do you think the Tweedles will be okay?”
Yeosang blinked then, but smiled slightly at her.
“Don’t fear, it will take more than a couple bullets and some werewolves to take down those two. They’re professionals, pet, fighting is what they do best.”
Concern still ate at her, but she supposed that Chess knew better than her what the Tweedles were truly capable of.
“Now…for the second condition of my agreement. I assume my recruitment was only part of the task Hongjoong gave you and the giants?”
She nodded, “We were also hoping you would help us find Mally and March.”
“That’s what I thought. Unfortunately, I’ve been avoiding them lately as I owe March a favor I’ve been unwilling to complete. Now though…I think a talented fae such as yourself could help me pull it off, making me no longer indebted and getting you through the door to meeting them.”
Though it sounded like a decent idea, caution still made her pause. Even if he was an ally of Hongjoong and the others, she knew virtually nothing about him aside from his reputation for general sneakiness and his mystical abilities.
“…what kind of favor?”
Yeosang grinned, secretly glad that she was skeptical of him as it showed she wasn’t blindly following Hongjoong’s orders and was more than just a pawn in this game.
He floated on his stomach again, resting his chin in his hands with a mischievous glint in his eye.
“A dangerous one. They’re assassins, you see, and nothing is more useful to an assassin than someone who can disappear on a whim. And now, they want me to help them with a bounty they’ve accepted, only it requires infiltration on a more…sophisticated level than what I can accomplish alone.”
That didn’t really answer the root of her question, Y/n raising an eyebrow at him and folding her arms across her chest.
“And you think I can be useful with such a bounty? I have no expertise in infiltrating or assassination, so how would I help? By doing what…being bait?”
He giggled gleefully, nodding with his signature sharp smile.
“Oh most definitely. There’s certain things only another fae could help with, and Hongjoong certainly can’t with something like this, so I must pass the task to you, pet.”
Yeosang bent at the waist to be at her face level, his feet still floating off the ground despite him standing upright again.
“Help me so we can all be reunited? Those are my conditions, complete the bounty with me, meet Mally and March…and that’s the end of it.”
She thought over his words carefully, the hybrid twirling in the air languidly as he waited for her answer. The vague details he’d given her made her think there was more to this bounty than he was letting on but, on the other hand, she doubted that he would actually put her in true danger. Even without a personal connection to her directly, Chess was bound to at least Hongjoong. If he was bound to the others too, she carefully rested her doubts on the hope that her connections with them would keep her safe.
“So I help you complete this bounty, you take me to meet Mally and March, and the four of us return to Marmoreal as Hongjoong wishes?”
“More or less in that order…yes, indeed.”
“…fine. What do you need me to do?”
Smiling triumphantly, Yeosang reached for her hands and pulled her to her feet, placing her before the mirror as he floated behind her. His arms circling her, he pulled on the buttons of Hongjoong’s coat until he could slide the silk from her shoulders.
“To start, I’ll be taking this.”
Y/n watched utterly astonished as he swung the coat over his shoulders then, his reflection shifting and rippling as the fabric settled. Looking back at her, still grinning like a madman, was a perfect replica of Hongjoong.
Almost perfect, she realized, as the fake Hongjoong still had slitted glowing eyes that it seemed Chess couldn’t hide. His plan dawned on her when he looped her arm through his and stood next to her. Bait, he’d said…no one in the city was more wanted than her and the White King.
“Who are you hunting? Who would take such high-profile bait in such an obvious trap?”
Yeosang chuckled at how quickly she grasped their goal.
“Someone incredibly desperate to please the Red King…someone who’s past can be used against him to eliminate a potentially strong ally the Court may call on in a time of war.”
“You’re not going to tell me who it is, are you?”
Her exasperation at his roundabout answer was plain on her face in the mirror and the cat’s smile on Hongjoong’s face did little to help the situation. Shifting back to himself, he took the coat off and threw it over the end of the bed, missing the way her eyes peeked at the bare skin beneath his own suit jacket in the reflection.
“No, pet, I’m not going to tell you…yet.”
“Then what of your name? I agreed to help you, am I allowed to know what you’re really called?”
His reflection smiled, bowing his head slightly.
“Indeed you have, my apologies. My name is Kang Yeosang, a pleasure to meet you, Y/n. And I must say, despite my earlier hostility, you’ve intrigued me.”
He turned and stood flush against her back again, his fluffy glowing tail curling around her as he whispered in her ear.
“And I like being intrigued.”
Goosebumps spread down her arms from the way his deep voice swirled in her head, taking a breath to try and calm her heart.
“I thought you wouldn’t be swayed so easily?”
His chuckle vibrated against her back at her murmur, his fingers coming up to undo her necklace again. The shiver that traveled up her spine from the way Yeosang ghosted his lips over her shoulder and neck distracted her from the sound of the chain dropping to the floor.
“I never said I was swayed, pet…but I suppose it’s only fair to the others that I at least give you a chance.”
The scent of her magic mixing with her almost immediate arousal made the hybrid smirk against her skin. She saw his pretty clawed fingers come around to hold her hips, pulling her back more to be pressed firmly against his chest.
The mirror showed everything, Y/n unable to hide her blush as he spoke lowly in her ear again.
“So go on…change my mind.”
She tried to turn to face him, Yeosang’s strong grip quickly holding her in place.
“No. Just like this, pet, show me the reflection of who you really are.”
Her blush deepened as she met his eyes in the mirror. He had already proven to be more difficult to read than the others, her mind racing to figure out what he wanted. The way he held her firm but still gentle, the caution he had when dealing with unknown people, the absolute discipline he had over his magic that allowed him to shape shift and disappear, all gave her an idea of how she might be able to appeal to him. This was a man who valued his control of himself and perhaps liked that control over others, so she softened her gaze as she pushed her ass into him fully, taking a guess that he and Hongjoong may have similar tastes.
“The reflection of who I really am? Is that who you want to see…Sir?”
Her guess was rewarded with a catch in Yeosang’s breath, his grip on her hips tightening as his pupils narrowed to slits. She bit her lip to hide her smile, looking back at him steadily before he smirked. His aura glowed with excitement, his fluffy ears and tail actually tangible when they brushed across her cheek and fingers.
“Well, well…seems who you really are is a very clever little fae. She who learns magic quickly and can easily read her enemies.”
“Enemies? And I thought we were on our way to getting along so well.”
Her sarcastic pout made him chuckle again, one of his hands finally leaving her hip to slowly trail up her body and hold around her jaw. Turning her head, Y/n’s breath caught this time as he brushed his lips against hers teasingly.
“You’re right, we are getting there, pet, but I know how we can move things along.”
A soft noise was swallowed between them when he kissed her. His other hand moved around her, sliding beneath the hem of her long sleeve as she rocked her ass back into him more where she could already feel him growing hard against her. Prying her lips open, his tongue ran against hers while he lifted the clothing between him and her skin.
Panting lightly as she pulled back, she caught sight of them again in the mirror. Yeosang’s aura glowed, reflecting in the glass and illuminating the room with warmth. His thumb rubbed her cheek softly as his eyes met hers in their reflection, his deep voice heavy with his own arousal when he murmured against her skin.
“If you’re going to tease me and call me ‘Sir’, then you’ll be good when I ask, won’t you?”
“I said I’d do anything, remember?”
His tail flicked in annoyance at her sass, his hand moving from her jaw to simply hold around her neck.
“You did, didn’t you? …anything, pet?”
She nodded against his grip, his fingers tightening slightly as he raised an eyebrow.
“…yes, Sir.”
His smirk returned before he moved her even closer to the mirror, pressing a kiss behind her ear as he started to disappear.
“Very good…keep your pretty eyes on the mirror, and take off those bothersome clothes.”
The glowing hybrid vanished completely, though she could still feel that he was standing behind her. Slowly, she undid her boots and belt, throwing them to the side before she lifted her shirt off, teasing him again as her skin was revealed inch by inch. She hummed softly when she felt his hands massage across her chest over her bra.
The sight of indents in her skin where his invisible fingers held had arousal pooling in her belly, her hand moving behind her and sliding against his chest as she unclipped the garment. He pinched and rolled both of her nipples suddenly when they were bared to him, her back arching at the zing of pleasure that shot through her. The way it perked her nipples was noticeable in the mirror and, luckily for the image he was trying to uphold, she couldn’t see how he salivated at the sight.
Leaving her chest alone, his hands followed hers as she moved to undo her pants. With his palms flat against her stomach, he was free to slide them lower into the waistband and into her underwear, pushing them both down to pool at her feet.
An appreciative sound was heard when she was naked for him, the feeling of his lips pressed against her shoulder again making her shiver, followed by his deep voice in her ear.
“I hate to admit how quickly I want to give you exactly what I know you want, pet. I can resist your tempting little magic, but if this is the effect you had on the others, I can see how you won them over so easily.”
Y/n pressed her lips to hide her smile, Yeosang reappearing in the reflection behind her, now missing his suit jacket and necklaces. The stripes of his aura were more clear across his bare chest, banding his torso and arms where they wrapped around her, his soft ears tickling her cheek again as he nipped and licked up the side of her neck.
“But not you, Sir? You still wont be swayed?”
A slight rumble of irritation was felt against her back as he glared at her in the mirror, his ears splayed in annoyance. He secretly loved the attitude behind her breathless words, but he had a point to make now, so he bit her shoulder a little harder before standing up straight behind her.
“Tsk…I find it hard to believe you were this mouthy with the others. Or are you being a brat because I’m playing hard to get?”
Without letting her answer, he knocked her ankles apart with his foot, spreading her legs and causing her to lean forward. A devilish look sparked in the gaze of his angelic reflection when she caught herself against the glass, her breath fogging the surface with a shudder as she saw how she bent over for him now.
The devilish look remained while he leisurely slid his hands over her body, kneading her ass in very cat-like motions as he continued lowly,
“That’s a princess attitude that has Yunho and Mingi written all over it…but no matter, it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve had to put someone in their place again after those two have had their way.”
The response on her tongue was lost as she cried out, her core pulsing as his hand quickly landed a solid smack on one side of her ass and then the other. His striped tail whipped playfully as he rubbed the red marks to soothe them, distracting her again with the sensation of him sliding his other hand between her legs and using two fingers to collect the arousal leaking from her.
“So wet already? At least part of you wants to be a good girl…”
The way she clenched around nothing against the pads of his fingers made him pause, his tail curling playfully again as he connected a few dots. Leaning over her back, he lowered his voice more, brushing his lips along the shell of her ear as he murmured, “Oohh and she is, pet…a very good girl. Feel that? She’s just sooo welcoming…”
“Mmm! ah~”
Back arching, she couldn’t hold the moan that escaped as he pressed those two fingers deep into her, finding her sweet spot with frightening ease. He teased her for a moment, her breath fogging across the glass as he played with her. Testing another theory, Yeosang grinned at her in the mirror while slowly disappearing, the sensation of his fingers in her only increasing the less she could see of him.
Still pressed against her back, the warmth of his invisible skin and his lips against her ear had her clenching hard, the words he spoke weaving a dizziness through her brain.
“Consider this another test, pet. Let’s see how much you want to be my ally…keep your eyes open as long as you can, and don’t you dare cum without my permission.”
“Yes, s-mm!…yes, Sir…”
Y/n could confidently say she’d never felt this drawn to another fae so completely. Seonghwa had earned her trust through dramatic circumstances and Hongjoong had broken through her walls with Seonghwa’s help, but her body reacted to Yeosang and her aura reached for him as though he were a missing part of her, and it left her reeling with desire.
Her legs trembled as the hybrid continued to stroke against her sweet spot, the occasional sting of his teeth and softness of his lips across her neck and shoulders a welcome contrast to the pleasure he was filling her with. Yeosang could also feel her aura reacting to him, the strength of it rising as the peak of her first orgasm neared with every movement of his fingers. She tightened around him, trying to hold herself back, but he tested her resistance more as his deep voice echoed through her head and his words only pushed her closer to the edge.
“Can you feel it, pet? Can you feel your pretty little pussy sucking me in…your intoxicating aura trying to pull me closer? So greedy…”
A dazed nod from her made the cat chuckle, pushing her right up to the brink of her orgasm before abruptly stopping the movement of his hand. She whined as her high dwindled away, another giggle swirling around her from the invisible man.
“W-why…?”
His body heat disappeared, along with the feeling of his fingers inside her. Obediently staying in the position he’d left her in, Y/n yelped softly as his hand harshly met her ass again over the existing red marks.
“Because, pet…you still haven’t passed the test. It wouldn’t be right to reward such a greedy little fae so soon, you haven’t even asked me nicely.”
In the past she would’ve been stubborn, fighting the Red Court members in the smallest ways and resisting every command, but her recent excursions with the other members of Hongjoong’s resistance led to her having no shame in breathlessly begging the hybrid for release.
“P-please, Sir…please let me cum for you! I promise you can trust me and I’ll do whatever it takes to be a good ally-ah!”
Against his wishes, her eyes closed tight in bliss as Yeosang roughly pushed his fingers into her again, her pleading seemingly satisfying the hybrid for now. Gripping her neck lightly, he growled in her ear as he scissored his fingers relentlessly.
“I said keep those pretty eyes open, pet. I want to see the way you break for me so easily.”
Blinding pleasure seared through her as her building orgasm came rushing back with a vengeance, hazy eyes opening to see just his glowing smile and eyes in the fogged mirror. His hand at her throat, his words in her ear, his stupidly talented fingers all had Y/n trembling as she fought to obey his order to only cum with his permission.
The sight of her trying so hard to please him and follow his rules had the cat practically foaming at the mouth, again thankful that his invisibility hid from her just how affected he was by her arousal. The deep sadistic part of him wanted to ‘punish’ her more, drawing her pleasure out to see just how far he could push her, but the sane part knew she both didn’t deserve that and they didn’t have the time.
Sighing rather dramatically, he crooked his fingers perfectly, relishing in the sound it drew from her as he spoke with a forced nonchalance,
“Alright, pet. I suppose you’ve passed this test, but don’t think this little game of ours is anywhere near over.”
Leaking down her thighs, and with tears in her eyes, Y/n locked her gaze with the cat’s floating smirk as he leaned over her again and commanded, “Cum for me.”
“Fuck!”
White clouded her vision and her ears were ringing as one of the more powerful orgasms she’d had in a while crashed over her at his words. Yeosang held her steady, her body trembling against him as he reappeared, working his fingers in her more gently and running his rough tongue up her neck to soothe her.
The glass of the mirror was cool against her forehead as she came down from the high, hissing lightly when he pulled his fingers from her.
“My, my, you certainly can be a good girl.”
A small smile and blush covered her face, opening her eyes at his low words to see his beauty fully visible behind her again.
“Thank you…Sir. Tell me, have you changed your mind?”
Though her voice was perfectly wrecked, the hybrid chuckled deep at her ability to still sass him. Shaking his head, he stepped back enough to let her stand straight before spinning her to face him. His arms slid around her, a wicked smile returning as he leaned close until their lips brushed.
“Nearly, pretty pet. But there’s just one more thing I need to test. Call it another…satisfaction of my own insatiable curiosity.”
Her lips tingled with his magic when he kissed her fully, so lost in the feeling of his tongue in her mouth and his aura surrounding her that she didn’t realize they were floating until her back touched the softness of the bed. Parting her legs for him naturally, Yeosang settled his weight on her, finally becoming addicted to her like the others before him as he kissed her deeper still. His hands were everywhere, mapping her body as though he were discovering something precious.
Her own hands traced over his back and shoulders, coming to rest around his neck while arching into his touch. When they finally parted for air, pride swelled in her chest at the flush on his face, brushing her thumb over his cheek with a tenderness that melted the skeptical cat.
Tracing over her bottom lip, he kissed her gently again before whispering, “On your knees, beautiful. I want you to watch how well you take me.”
Floating off of her, he helped turn her around until she was on hands and knees facing the mirror. His fascination with her ass continued, Y/n pushing back into his hands on instinct as he palmed and squeezed her reddened flesh. Another satisfied hum left the fae as he smoothed up her back, pushing gently between her shoulders to watch her drop into a beautiful arch, his glowing eyes locking with hers again in their shared reflection. Blown pupils looked back at her, seeing evidence of her affect on the hybrid for the first time that night.
Even without an official command from him, she found she couldn’t look away from his reflection if she tried. Her eyes followed his every move in the mirror as he undid his pants, pulling his cock from his now very tight slacks, and rubbed just the head through the mess he’d made of her folds. Both of them shivered, Yeosang’s aura shimmering brighter at the feeling of her warmth.
Pushing into her unexpectedly, a small moan left her lips but still she didn’t look away. Again his aura shimmered, swirling around him as he succumbed to the pleasure of filling her slowly until he bottomed out. The heavy and full feeling of him so deep inside her almost made her crosseyed, the hybrid smirking at her attempt to stay focused on him.
“That feel good, pet? Will you be good one last time and keep your pretty gaze on me?”
The question was a disguised command, but she nodded as best she could against the bed. His large fanged smile appeared as he began to disappear again, a small noise of protest leaving her until it was silenced by the moan she released from his first calculated thrust.
Keeping a slow but deep and punishing pace, a rumbling groan slipped from Yeosang as he could see how perfectly she engulfed his invisible cock. Each thrust pushed a breathy moan from her, Y/n fisting her hands in the sheets to keep her grounded as pleasure coursed through her entire body with the wet sounds filling the room.
“Mmmm-fuck-ahh…look at you…so pretty taking cock. No wonder-ah, no wonder you’ve collected so many loyal protectors so quickly.”
Y/n whined lowly, another moan cutting her off as she felt him lean over her, pushing himself impossibly deeper so he could kiss across her shoulders. Invisible fingers swept her hair away from her face, his sharp teeth scraping against her ear as he murmured again.
“I want to feel the way you fall apart completely, pet. Consider our pact formed, your protection for my cooperation, the very moment you make a beautiful mess all over my cock.”
His weight shifted again as he knelt straight behind her, the feeling of his hands on her hips the only warning she received before he began to fuck into her mercilessly.
“AH!~”
Arching farther to feel him as deep as possible, she desperately tried to keep her eyes open, the outline of his aura calling to her as her brain melted. She wanted to see him, truly see him as they both chased their peak together. Pulling from the energy pouring off of him, she opened her aura like she had to Hongjoong, her eyes glowing as her pleasured cries reached new heights.
Yeosang was in awe, unable to pull his eyes from her in the mirror or stop his hips even if he wanted to as she pulled his aura towards her own like the allure of a siren. His resistance to her crumbled when she clenched around him in the wake of her orgasm, the disbelieving groan he released strained as he tried to hold himself back.
“P-please…please, Yeosang! Wanna see you-u…need to*hic*to cum…”
The familiar heat rushed up her spine, her mind going blank as she gave one final tug on his aura, pleasure wiping all sensible thought from her while she fought to keep her eyes from rolling back in her head. Her orgasm hit hard, dazed eyes widening as her power forced the hybrid to fully appear, pulling him from being invisible and throwing him into his own orgasm at the same time.
“Ooh fuck!”
Pulling out as fast as he could, his release painted her ass and even up her back as a deep rumbling moan was punched from his chest. His head fell back with his ears pinned and his tail curled as he stroked himself through the aftershocks, holding his other hand under her hip to keep her steady while tremors shook her legs.
Panting filled the quiet of the room as they calmed down, the fae finally bringing his head back around to admire his work, heat filling his gaze when they locked eyes in the mirror one last time. She was beyond fucked out but still she obediently watched his reflection, a sense of pride in her look that made him chuckle softly.
Reaching over to the bedside table, he pulled a small towel from the drawer and used it to gently clean his cum from her skin. Spreading her cheeks with his thumb, she saw his pupils narrow for a moment as he admired her puffy folds, a surprised yelp leaving her when he leaned down to lick a thorough stripe through their combined mess.
“Ahh~…sensitive Chess…”
Yeosang chuckled again, throwing the towel to the floor as he helped her lay more comfortably on her side.
“I’m sorry, pretty. Couldn’t resist.”
Lying down with her, he brushed her hair from her face and couldn’t help admiring the bite marks he’d left on her neck and shoulders, hoping they’d be a darker color by the time they saw Seonghwa again. She watched him fondly, exhaustion washing over her from the chaos of her night, but still she had to sass him once more before sleeping.
“Sir? Does this mean…you’ve been swayed?”
A full body laugh erupted from the hybrid, his eyes crinkling in amusement and his aura shimmering brightly. He slid his arms around her and pulled her to him, mirth still shaking through him .
“Yes, Y/n…consider my mind changed. I see now what the others saw in you…and I’m very glad you’ve ensnared me with your ‘enchanting little aura’. Sleep now, pet. We have a difficult task ahead of us.”
A satisfied smile graced her lips at his words, her eyes finally closing as she melted into his warm embrace, the soft feeling of his tail laid across her bare skin. Rest was coming to her quickly, her body giving in despite how her mind raced about completing this mysterious bounty and finding Mally and March.
The peace she needed to sleep came at last when she felt Yeosang tighten his hold around her, a soft vibration lulling her into darkness with the warm realization that this intimidating, powerful, closed off hybrid-fae…was purring.
