WHY U HATE SAO I NEED THE DETS

Shortly put, it's a gigantic pot of wasted potential.

The first half establishes the "plot" of the show. They're trapped in a fantasy video game, and the only way to get out is to beat it. Now, here's what they should have done: explored the game. There's a hole lot of potential! There are game mechanics, weapons, classes, towns, monsters and all sorts of things to build on in a fantasy game! (Basically, what Log Horizon does, or at least from what I've seen so far).

INSTEAD, THOUGH, Kirito is just a male wish fulfillment character. The whole show is basically him building up his harem of cute and/or sexy girls with his antisocial personality and incredibly gruff and rude attitude. He's such a charmer, right? I can't imagine how these girls could possibly control their ovaries! Kirito is also unreasonably strong for no reason other than "he's the protagonist". He fucking stands and beats this gang of like five in a fight. That's how he fucking wins. He just stands there. There's also zero character development and the final boss battle is super unsatisfying. Nothing like Deus Ex Machina to win! ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S COMPLETELY UNEXPLAINED. Of course, between the lass battle and the start is like ten filler episodes in a twenty-five episode anime (in other words, they were completely unnecessary, and added absolutely nothing to the non-existent plot). It also suffers from a major case of Dissociative Genre Disorder where it can't decide if it wants to be a fantasy action anime or a fucking slice of life show, so it decides instead to be both, and everything else in between.

In the second half is where the show goes from really bad to total shit, though. Not only does the wish fulfillment of "OH MY GOD IT'S KIRITO I'M GONNA CLIMAX JUST BY LOOKING AT HIS APATHETIC BEING" harem continue, his fucking cousin falls in love with him. COUSIN. BUT WAIT THAT'S NOT THE WORST PART.

Asuna, the primary love interest, gets raped. By tentacles. As fanservice. If that's not atrocious, I don't know what is.

Also the final battle in part two is literally the same thing as the final battle in part one. Straight down to the Deus ex Machina bullshit victory.
