COME UP CORNER: iLoveMakonnen
If there’s anything you can take from iLoveMakonnen it’s that music videos are the dopest networking tool an artist can have. If you take the time to actually peep his YouTube page, he has well over 40 videos, talk about content. Any Makonnen interview will include “ They saw my videos and fucked with it….” when referring to anyone that’s joined his team. That quote isn’t only referenced for big name producers like Metro Boomin, or even bigger artist like Drake. It starts all the way from meeting his producer, Prez, and chillwave bands like his collective Phantom Posse. Makonnen took initiative to meet these people going from LA to NY. Surviving house arrest from a murder case though music is a good excuse as any to mass produce music. Most DIY articles you’ll read will advise against that, but what do you know, it worked!
What can we, as artists, learn from Makonnen.
CONTENT IS KING: Not just a bunch of unmixed songs, but an overwhelming slew from the studio and a super plus is having as many videos as possible. It may not be the most lucrative marketing scheme but with each video you put out your giving yourself credibility and finding out who fucks with you along the way.
TAKE INITIATIVE OR DIE: Collaboration is important and many opportunities are waiting in every feature. Maybe you’ll get invited to be in a chillwave band when you travel from your humdrum town to NY. Not only that, maybe you’ll meet a manager willing to set you in the right direction. This also falls in the collaboration department, real musicians are always making music for improvement and bouncing new sounds from one another. Plus, artists can’t be lab rats at their studio, that’s for the engineers. Go to many studios.
How "real" does a rapper have to be?
Is it necessary to discredit people like Rick Ross because their tales are false? One of the best aspects of rap music is story-telling and a good story isn’t always fictional. Should we be pissed, or just stfu and be entertained?
