James wasn’t very secure with his sexuality while in the early years in the Garrison. No one could know he wasn’t the “perfect” guy, that he had feelings for guys, that Keith Kogane had captured his heart. What would people say? What would his parents think? Not only in love with a guy, but a delinquent at that! No, he couldn’t. No one could know. So every little bit of affection he showed, he made sure it was private. No one watching, no one near, no CCTV. If there was zero chance of anyone seeing anything, he’d be the most affectionate guy ever. But if Keith got too close to him in the hallway, if he stared a little too long in class, if their hands even brushed together for a second he’d go internally crazy. He avoided Keith like the plague with other people around, but alone. Alone he was the most loving, most amazing boyfriend ever. It was hard for Keith to believe the two were the same person.

But that made leaving easier for Keith. When he got suspended they couldn’t ever be alone again, he wouldn’t have to worry about which James was there. He didn’t have to be saddened when James didn’t even look his way in class, he didn’t have to figure out how James truly felt about him. He could just go. He could be free.

Shiro asks Keith to be his best man and plan Shiro and Curtis' wedding. Keith runs himself ragged trying to give Shiro the best wedding possible, and the event goes off without a hitch. Shiro thanks him profusely at the reception and Keith half-heartedly grumbles that while he did it because Shiro deserved the best after everything he'd gone through in space, planning this wedding was the most stressful thing he'd ever accomplished and now Shiro owed him one. Shiro laughs and lets him leave to catch his breath and Keith sneaks out onto a roof somewhere where he can oversee the festivities without having to participate in them himself.

James spots him from the crowd and joins him on the roof, a bottle in hand. The two sit on the roof sharing the bottle and shooting the breeze. After the war ended, the two grew close again, just like when they were kids, but they never really put a label on their relationship either, just like when they were kids.

The two of them are watching the crowd beneath them and making drole commentary. Without taking his eyes off the scene in front of him, Keith hands James something- a ring. Without taking his eyes off the scene in front of them, James puts it on. Simple as that.

They know the two of them will stumble into Keith's room later, kiss-drunk and messy. They know they'll wake up tomorrow morning whispering plans for the future into each other's ears. They know that James will insist on making the marriage out to be a grand affair and Keith will be relieved of his wedding planning duties as he laughingly watches his fiance turn into Bridezilla. But for now they just sit and watch the world turn around them.

(Shiro is shocked to find that he'll be cashing in his favor sooner than expected.)
