Maybe this is a hot take, but I think James Griffin is misunderstood.

I’m kinda regretting the way I wrote Griffin in Keith’s lore. I’m rewatching VLD, and the whole time I’m like, “He’s just so real.” I’m definitely gonna need to revisit the stuff I have written for him, like he can still be a jerk, but not an asshole. I dunno why I imagine him automatically being mean to everyone. I guess I’ve misunderstood the guy. He’s a kiss-up and whatever, but the only one he’s ever really had a problem with is Keith. He seems like a hard worker and smart person, plus he puts aside what he wants for the sake of doing what he has to do.

I’ve been trying to contextualize Griffin cause I feel like I’m not doing him justice and I lowkey really like him. Or rather, I like his potential and the character I’ve made in my mind.

Is he still a jerk for making fun of Keith’s lack of parents? YEAH. I’m not excusing the kid, but also middle schoolers are horrible sometimes. I don’t think Keith was ever passive whenever Griffin was bullying him or being a jerk. It feels decently two-sided between ‘em.

There’s so much nuance in my mind and I’m hoping it translates into VTLL somehow, someway, even if it takes final editing to happen. Right now, I’m just trying to get something written down lololol. The perfectionist in me is really struggling with Earth. I feel like it ought to be something profound and it’s simply not there yet.

But Griffin just has SO MUCH potential, especially with the y/n subplot I’m doing and with his past with his younger sister. There’s so much inter working going on and ugh, I have such a movie in my head. I wish I could share it with all VTLL readers.

I promise I have some semblance of plot y’all 😔🏃🏻‍♀️

I’m really excited for what’s coming if I manage to write it how I’m imagining it play out.

James Griffin Headcanons

Shiro was James's hero growing up, he's the reason that James wanted to be a fighter pilot. So when Shiro went to visit his middle school James was star-struck.

This is why he held so much animosity towards Keith. Because his hero was paying attention to someone who, in his mind, had everything he didn't.

James was an unplanned child, his parents never really paid any mind to him unless they were pushing their unrealistic expectations onto him.

When he joined the Garrison he told his parents that he joined under their biology program instead of the fighter pilot program. When they found out (years later) they disowned him.

James, Ina, and Keith went to the same elementary and middle school. Though they weren't always in the same class.

His parents forced him to learn piano and violin growing up.

He hates nicknames, just call him by his real name.

James used to have a crush on Ina back in middle school; it's a secret he'll take to his grave. Ina knew.

He has Bipolar II, his hypomania episodes consist of racing thoughts, scattered focus, and an increase in impulsivity.

James was actually in a hypomanic state when he made that comment towards Keith.

His depressive episodes are much worse than his hypomanic ones, his longest one was three weeks long. It was after Keith had gotten kicked out of the Garrison.

He is ashamed of his mental illness and keeps it a secret close to his chest. He's afraid of being labeled/seen as “unstable,” and he doesn't want to burden others with his problems.

James has a very strong sense of justice, and this often gets him into trouble.

He and Keith were roommates at the Garrison. They fought consistently for half a year.

After Keith punched James, they both got in trouble (Keith for punching James and James for antagonizing Keith) and had to clean the cafeteria as punishment.

It was the first time Keith and James actually talked to each other as people rather than rivals.

in particular the James ended up doing substance abuse.

so this is like after the paladins all came back probably after earth has been freed but like imagine if the paladins and the mfes decided to use the head thingys that showed the paladins stuff about each other, and obviously can't really control what if shows. (they do it in pairs)

so it's James turn he hasn't told Keith about how he went feral for like the first few months and or year or two after Keith got kicked and went missing and just imagine the headthingy starts to show the fact that James ended up doing drugs like his own father after his mother left

James screams mother issues and father issues and his family are probs all dead anyway but still like father like son and all that

it shows James struggle with substance abuse for about like I wanna say 30 seconds before James just yanks the thing from his head and goes quiet...very quiet and it just hits Keith that him leaving had consequences even if James promised to not kicked out after Keith, the raven haired boy still left and went missing and was assumed dead for five years and it messed James up so much that it answers all of Keith unasked questions to what happened to James and why he changed so much
