Short reviews no one asked for 10/? Wake Up Chanee
Thailand GMMTV
Dr. Nat (Niti Chaichitatorn) is a successful neurologist and self-proclaimed love advisor who finds entertainment in getting his four friends’ love lifes sorted. No-nonsense business woman Jane (Jakjaan) is finally about to settle down after experimenting a lot in the past. Romantic country girl Aei (Kumoun Maneerat) is looking for her one true love and has no regard for her professional work life. To fashion designer Kluay (Apissada Kreurkongka) there’s no need to get into a relationship if you can just sleep with all the men. The baby of the group Tata (Namtan Tipnaree) is unexperienced and sees no need to look for a man: her useless college degree is much more worrying. While navigating his friends’ love lives Nat seems to meet one of his one-night stands (Benjamin Joseph Varney) way too often for it not to be a sign to start caring more about his own love story.
Things that could’ve been improved
For a seemingly superficial romcom this series managed to go over the top with tropes and caricature them in a perfect manner, however there still was some stereotyping of women that could’ve been challenged better. I wish that the writers would’ve made more use of Jane’s sexuality and had given her a female love interest. I’m still mad Benjamin Joseph Varney didn’t get included in the opening (which has a hella catchy song btw).
Things that were great
Every character is a walking stereotype but sososoo lovable, even the token dream boy has his flaws, gay main character is played by an openly gay man (who is also very vocal about criticizing stereotyping), cute boys and girls all around (the whole main cast + Lee Thanat, Big Thongpoom, First Kanaphan, Benjamin Joseph Varney, Max Jenmana), great character development, perfect and diverse side characters, surprisingly deep for a romcom, the humour and the editing are on point!, perfectly entertaining product placement, this show is stupidly funny, gay character gets the best storyline (I actually had to cry at some point. even better: not because of typically angsty gay storylines but profound writing about the ups and downs in life), drag queens, lip syncs, I love Niti Chaichitatorn in general, also it’s funny as hell.
Rating: 9.5/10
Recommendation: Watch it!!!! If you need something uplifting and entertaining = watch it now, because when are you not in need of such a series.
