Rain

  It's raining in the garden,

and I'm remembering the day before,

at Glenshelane Woods, the river

scrubbing the grey rocks,

  Trish faded voice, Emmanuel

come and swing, come.

A rope is tied to the big elm tree.

The branch could break anytime.

  It takes some sort of trust,

to swing under the tree

just as it takes some sort of trust,

to stay under this rain.

Remembering

  One special night, weeks or years

from now, head on the pillow,

full with dreams, you’ll wake up,

from the sleep  you’ve been sleeping

to sleep, eyes staring out the window

to the dim stars bright in the sky,

opening their mouth saying nothing.

You will smile, feeling so good

that there is something in you

that shook my cool, burnt me inside.

Oritsegbemi Emmanuel Jakpa was born in Warri, Nigeria, and currently lives in Ireland.  His poetry has been published widely, including The Diagram, Echoing Years, Barnwood, and Edison Literary Review. He has been nominated for Pushcart Prizes three times,  and  he  received  the 2008 Yeat’s  Pierce  Loughran Award.
