August 9, 2014 The Centurion" We say when the rain falls in Jamaica it's a blessing. Well just as we were getting ready to head back to Montego Bay, a monsoon type shower chased us into the car. As we shuffled through water filled potholes, we passed by the Nembhard's residence. Mummy pointed to the curb, and told me to stop for a minute. It was our third year in a row attempting to see the centurion, Mrs. Hyacinth "Clover" Nembhard, a woman she grew up admiring in the town of Eldersley where she grew up. This year she reached the ripe age of 107. In the dim light she sat with poise and elegance looking towards the doorway. ""Mrs Clover as we called her back in the day was married to "Busha" Eddie, the go see man in the town. You should see her when she was going to church. Everything matched and she always carried an umbrella," my mother told me. Back in the day, the Overseer or plantation owner was called "Busha". It was a name that was carried forward from the times of slavery -- you were simply the big man in town if you were anointed by that name. Luckily she was up and I walked in with my camera. The living room was very dark so I turned on a little LED light. But before I could make one picture, she reached forward with both her hands and grabbed mine, she said, "What a fine young boy. Don't stop loving. Continue to love everyone and you will be fine, such a fine young boy." She was smiling, and I smiled back. #oggl_ig #blackportraiture #stelizabethportrait #streetportrait #streetphotography #makeportrait #makeportraits #documentary #igers #instamood #jamaicaportrait #storiesfromtheothersideofparadise #sonyrx1 (at Eldersley)
