Today, @wynnowak, Hudson, and I joined hundreds of people in the Out of the Darkness Walk to Prevent Suicide in Omaha. While many people were walking in honor of loved ones they’ve lost to suicide, I walked to honor elementary student Jamel Myles, 9, from Denver, Colorado who was bullied into committing suicide after coming out as gay. LGBTQIA+ youth are some of the most at-risk people for suicide in America today, but Trans youth and Queer Youth of Color face the highest risk of Self-Harm and Suicide among us. I ask that for those of us fortunate enough to have a loving home or strong support system to ensure that we open our hearts and arms to those in our community who aren’t as lucky and need caring adults and friends in their lives, and if you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and you’re struggling with depression or thoughts of suicide, please reach out to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 and if you aren’t a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, but you’re also struggling with depression or thoughts of Suicide, you are just as welcome to my family and I urge you to call the SPL as well. Decades after I left school I still find the#BacktoSchool phrase unsettling. It reminds me of the dread I used to feel when the prospect of school loomed like a thunder cloud of over September. With this in mind I've made a poster to remind all of the children and all of the parents that "Everybody has the right to live without the need to fight". This reality was tragically highlighted recently with the case of #JamelMyles a nine year old boy that committed suicide after he bravely came out at school. This is what #PansyBoy is all about, the dread of a child stepping into a violent school environment. Print it off if you like (It will look best in colour A3). This is so sad as 9 year old #jamelmyles mom says that she believes that her son committed suicide due to being bullied at school for being gay. Kids can be so cruel it’s beyond belief. Bullies are cancerous and they truly ruin lives. My condolences goes out to his mother. What would you do if your child was being bullied at school??? I’m just sad he didn’t come to me,” she told the station about her son’s suicide. “I’m so upset that he thought that was his option.” Authorities and school district officials have not confirmed that bullying was a factor in Jamel’s death, but have said that the case is still under investigation.
