After the 183 passengers finally got off a stuck Amtrak train after 36 hours, one after another mentioned one person as a source of kindness who helped them manage the ordeal and, maybe more importantly, brought them comfort: James Lake. When the train first stalled, James Lake didn’t flinch. He helped parents find spaces for their children to nap. He met a musician, then organized music in the café for the kids. And when supplies ran out, he fashioned makeshift diapers for passengers with youngsters, using terrycloth towels and hunting for safety pins over the intercom. Lake was one of the few that actually had cell service, so he passed his phone around to anyone who needed it. And he provided it to the outside world, letting friends and family call his number to reach passengers and track people down. He would announce incoming calls over the intercom. “He kept the whole train connected in a family kind of way,” said passenger Barbara May. Lake said, “They were all so grateful, and when you get that it keeps you motivated and positive.”
