Did this show deserve a third season?🤔
@jamesllewis our good pal and master behind the EYE let us ask him a few questions about the art piece that almost broke Instagram! GT: What was your inspiration? How did you come up with the idea? JL: "My inspiration for this piece has been something building up inside for around a year based on the art I see around me. I was looking for a way to combine my love of letters with an interesting technique which could potentially bring more realism to my art." GT: What tools did you use? JL: "The artwork was painted on hand stretched canvas with a selection of acrylic paints." GT: How did you prep for it? And how did you configure the stencils? JL: "The process to awhile to understand and combined my digital retouching skillset with my lettering knowledge. It began with creating really bold lettering—tightly kerned, that would be the base for the eye. Using photoshop, I then combined CMYK printing techniques to transform the photo of an Eye into the 4 stencil layers." GT: How many hours were spent on this project? JL: "Overall the project took around 15 hours, 8 of them cutting stencils. Taking my time with projects means I’m less likely to mess up and gives me time to focus on one thing while the rest of the world fades into the background." GT: What’s next?! JL: "This piece was more of an experiment which I was surprised was even possible. And the post had 800,000+ impressions. The positive feedback, and instant sale of the artwork has definitely shown me I can push the boundaries. So expect a lot more creative lettering like this! Not to worry if you’re more a fan of traditional lettering, I’m working on a HUGE online course with that will be coming out later this year!" GT: What was the most popular question on this video? JL: “Most people were confused at the process so maybe a few months down the line I’ll create a tutorial for all those who’ve got the time and patience to try it out." CAN YOU WRITE MY NAME?! By the hand of @jamesllewis Sound familiar? 😂 I’m not one to complain, I appreciate and reply to all inboxes I receive, however I do believe there’s an issue in the lettering/ calligraphy community. - - There are people who feel justified in asking for an artist to spend their time creating a piece of art for free because it’s their name. Would you expect a portrait artist to draw your face for free? This reminds me of a story I heard a while back - - The story goes that Picasso was sitting in a Paris café when an admirer approached and asked if he would do a quick sketch on a paper napkin. Picasso politely agreed, swiftly executed the work, and handed back the napkin — but not before asking for a rather significant amount of money. The admirer was shocked: “How can you ask for so much? It took you a minute to draw this!” “No”, Picasso replied, “It took me 40 years” - - I’m not claiming to be Picasso, nor do I scribble down names quickly, but there is a lot to be said about this story, don’t you think? I hope to change this perception of typographic art in all forms so that it’s as respected as much as ‘traditional’ art, a challenge I know will take a long time, a lot of hard work, and the support of other likeminded people. - Despite all I’ve just said, I loved painting painting this name! The art purchaser plans on framing each letter individually and hanging them in her newborn sons room. it’s amazing to know that this piece of art will be a part of their lives for a very long time! - - Music by @joakimkarudmusic - - - - - - - - #CalligraphyMasters #KeepWriting #Calligraphy #handlettering #lettering #typography #calligraphy #handdrawntype #goodtype #typegang #illustration #artistsofinstagram #ligaturecollective #artvideo #signpainting #oddlysatisfying #artistofinstagram #sketch #jamesllewis #inspire #creative #creativity #canyouwritemyname #canyoudrawme
