As you wander down the streets of Manhattan with no where in particular to go, you put your Airpods in listening to a True Crime Podcast as you get some fresh air for what feels like the first time in forever. You were heartbroken over the recent break up with Sal, he was away from home a lot and with the recent passing of my father along with near enough no support from Sal due to him being away so often we butted heads and it ultimately came to calling it a day. Sal tried his hardest when he was on the road to make things work with Facetiming and calling at every opportunity and even that night as I stood in tears in our shared house he begged me not to leave and he told me he’d sacrifice everything for us to work.
That night I left with nothing but my car keys, phone and purse. I had nowhere to go apart from my late father’s apartment which I had to decide to sell or keep it for myself. As I sit on the sofa in the empty lounge with nothing but a tv I look around trying to think of ideas for furniture to fill the empty space. All of my father’s furniture was donated to the Salvation Army, Nobody wanted it and I never thought i’d be in the situation where i’d now be living in the apartment.
I take no notice of the passing crowds as I stroll through Washington Square Park in my own little world. Unbeknownst to me Sal and the other guys were filming in that location today, it wasn’t noticeable as the camera’s were always hidden. It was Sal’s turn to go out and do what the others told him to, he heard Joe in his earpiece speak to the other guys mentioning that the women to the far left looked like you, Sal wasn’t supposed to hear what was being said but Joe forgot to unplug the microphone. Sal looks around in the passing crowd frowning trying to spot you, he looks around and speaks back to the other Jokers making it clear that if this was a joke - it wasn’t funny.
Joe tells Sal to turn ever so slightly to the left and look towards the fountain that I was passing. Sal’s heart drops as he sees you strolling past, he pulls out his earpiece and runs after you. You jump when someone grabs your hand, turning around with confusion on you’re face your heart races a hundred miles an hour as you’re looking into the love of your life’s eyes. Tears threaten to fall down your face as you take out your Airpods, placing them in your pocket. Sal pulls you into him wrapping his arms tight around you whilst softly stroking your hair, you melt into his touch and you’ve missed the smell of his cologne.
You pull away looking at your feet as Sal softly strokes your back. “I’m assuming you’re filming?” I ask already knowing the answer. Sal nods back in response before asking all the usual questions like how’re you, what have I been doing, where am I staying, how am I coping with the grief. Anxiety fills my body and my hands begin to shake as I quickly say goodbye to Sal and near enough run away. I toy with myself trying to decide if I should look back at him which I do and I feel my heartbreak in my chest, Sal’s sat against the little wall of the fountain with his head in his hands sobbing. I stop out of sigh with tears streaming down my face from a mixture of heartbreak and anxiety, I watch as the other Jokers sit next to Sal patting his shoulder and giving him a hug. I felt terrible walking away but he ultimately chose his career over me, something i’d never do over him.
It had been a couple of months since I last seen Sal in person at this point but every night I seen him on Impractical Jokers as I flicked through the tv. Today was my first day off in what feels like forever, earlier in the day i’d been to Ikea and Costco to get furniture and essentials to stock the fridge. I spent the afternoon building all the furniture making the apartment a home and I loved everything that i’d picked up. It didn’t feel so empty now.
I bite the bullet and ask Sal to come over in the evening, he was going to find out sooner or later may as well get it over with. I pull on some leggings and a tshirt as I hear a soft knock at the door, I take a deep breath as I open the door to be faced with Sal who’s stood with a bag from our favourite Chinese and bunch of summer flowers wrapped in brown paper. He smiles as I invite him inside, as we make our way through the apartment towards the kitchen to plate up our dinner Sal suddenly comes to a hault, he knows.
I turn around and look at him as my anxiety goes through the roof, he stands gobsmacked as he looks at my now noticable baby bump. “Sal listen, for the past couple of months i’ve been in and out of hospital with stomach pain and really heavy periods, the hospital thought I had IBS with swelling in my tummy. It’s just as much of a shock for you as it is for me…”. Sal places the flowers and takeaway bag on the counter as he approaches you, he reaches out his hand placing it on the side of your bump softly stroking his thumb over the fabric of your tshirt. I look up at him as tears stream down his face, I hope they’re happy tears. “When do you go to the hospital next?” He asks as our eyes meet. “Tomorrow, 10am”. Sal nods back in response. “I’ll be here at 9.15am to collect you, i’ll drive us there and if it’s ok with you, i’d like to come in.” I agree to Sal’s request as we plate up dinner and sit on the couch.
Sal hadn’t touched his food instead he sat beside me softly talking and stroking my bump. “She can hear you, you know” I softly chuckle. “It’s a girl?” His eyes light up and my heart literally aches at his reaction. “It’s a girl” I confirm, Sal beams proudly at me before placing a kiss on my bump. He smile at me as our eyes lock together, in that moment it felt like the whole world had stopped and it was just us three. Sal leans in placing a soft kiss on my lips before pulling back looking for permission to continue, I wrap my arms around his neck placing my lips back on his as he pulls me closer. We pull away after what feels like an eternity, Sal places his head on mine as he softly speaks. “From now on, everything I do is all for you both. You’ll never need to work or worry ever again. Please can we sort things out between us so we can be a family of three with our little girl?” I nod back in agreement as I take Sal’s hand placing it at the top of my bump where he nearly jumps off the sofa in total shock. “Did she just kick?!”. “She agrees as well, I want to be a family of three and I also want to come home.” Sal smiles as he places a kiss on my hair before clearing away my plate and beginning to eat his food.
