wait why
well first there's the issue of age; i mean he's way too old to play snape and by about 30 years. also i had never really thought about it before but a week or two ago, julvett pointed out that he's too deadpan for snape. and this may have been an issue with the directors since it became a trademark thing for snape's character and they wanted to milk/showcase that. but when you read the books, snape's much more…emotionally available? like he's a lot angrier and more expressive. i mean he's a man that holds a lot of pain, guilt, anger, self-loathing, frustration, cruelty, lost love for a dead woman he pushed away, has this weird combination of a superiority and inferiority complex, and then he has this sick fascination with the dark arts and i feel like that wasn't portrayed in the films enough. he was kind of like a one-note sort of character until the prince's tale scene (which was done all wrong but whatever). again, i don't know if this was alan rickman's interpretation/fault or if he was just following direction. but it's a bit disappointing when you think about it. snape was kind of used as a tool for comic relief in the later films (like he was simply grumpy cat instead of professor that bullied his students) and that does the character a disservice.
but alan rickman has a wicked sounding voice and i think he has the capacity as an actor to portray snape the way that he was written, but just didn't.
