I'm very glad I made a new email for the support line on Jamhouse because it turns out launching a new game results in infinite key resellers turning up in your inbox trying to scam you into sending them copies of the game they can then pass on to the grey market.

some choice patterns:

A bunch of emails claiming to represent a Steam Curator with thousands of followers. They'll always provide a link to the curator, and the curator will always be legit-- but do note that there's no actual confirmation that it's that curator who sent the email.

A bunch of emails claiming to be a Twitch Streamer with a link to their twitch account, which very often has not been online in years. I guess they were just so wowed by Jamhouse they decided it was time for their big comeback!

Very often they contrive reasons to ask for multiple keys. Sometimes it's because their team has multiple reviewers who all need to play the game, sometimes it's because they want to do a big giveaway to their thousands of followers to, like, grow your audience I guess. Other times they don't even bother with the pretense and just say "multiple keys please :)" in the email body.

Some are using more advanced tactics. One emailed me asking to show the game off on their tiktok which did seem to be a real account on the real website, with the email confirmed to match in the header. Fair number of followers too. But wait, is that an AI pfp they're using? And you crack open the videos proper and you'll find the cadence of speech is odd, the observations made are generic, and all the comments are shit like this:

Despite it all, I'm pretty sure some percentage of them are legit. Some are more insistent that you use the inbuilt Steam systems to get them their copy instead of asking that you send a naked key that would be easy to hock online. It's just a shame that genuinely connecting with them requires sifting through the bots and grifters and second-guessing their intentions.
