Still working out the best way to share music with you all. The options are essentially: Youtube, Soundcloud, Spotify. On Youtube and Soundcloud, the music is rarely posted by the creators, so Spotify seems like the most “official” way to go -- but you have to be logged in to Spotify in order to access it. And to be entirely honest, Spotify’s royalty payouts are really questionable. But perhaps we should lean more toward Spotify anyway, because attribution is important!

Anyway, this is an excerpt from the Braid soundtrack: the title track Maenam by Jami Sieber. Braid is a fascinating little puzzle game with an enigmatic yet thoughtful backstory. Aside from the artwork, it was developed entirely by creator Jonathan Blow, who chose to use licensed music rather than a new score to reduce fees. I am all for new video game scores, but!-- Blow did a fantastic job selecting the musical pieces that lay the framework for the emotional space of the game. He also was careful to choose tracks that could be successfully manipulated in reflection of the time mechanics in the game: reversing, slowing down, speeding up, etc. It’s truly a fascinating example of the union of gameplay and music adaptability, particularly as a means of conveying integral information about the mechanics to the player.

Plus my heart just melts a little at all the gorgeous cello in Maenam.
