Em uma cidade pequena e fria, o corpo do adolescente Jamie Marks é encontrado perto do rio. Adam, estrela do time de cross-country do colégio, desenvolve uma obsessão por Jamie, um garoto com quem ninguém falava, a não ser para fazer bullying de vez em quando. Quando o fantasma de Jamie começa a visitar Adam e Gracie, a colega que descobriu o corpo, Adam fica preso entre dois mundos. Ele começa um romance com Gracie, mas também sente uma ligação profunda com Jamie, que lhe o aproxima do mundo dos mortos.
