In 2007, pre-2011 when InternetSensation "Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger" YouTube Video stole the limelight, illustrator/writer Jamison Odone wrote this bizarre children's book titled "Honey Badgers".
My first thought when I saw this at my library was, "WTF!!! Maurice Sendak illustrated a book about HoneyBadgers?! No fucking way!"
My second thought was, "There is no effing way any children's librarian will EVER be able to read this during storytime ... ever again!"
I asked the youth librarian if she would ever be able to read this book to children... with or without a straight face... with or without children's parents present. She said, "No fereeaking way! Let me read that! ... There is no way I would ever be able to read this book out loud to children!"
Then I thought:
#1: Sucks to be a Honey Badger. They will never be taken seriously ever again... at least for a few generations. That is kind of very sad, imo... even though Honey Badgers Don't Give A Shit.
#2: Sucks to be Jamison Odone whose book will never/rarely be read to children in most libraries throughout the world. This may be due to a number of factors: ONE: No one will be able to read this book without LOLing at author's serendipitous expense. TWO: Though the illustrations are beautiful, they remind me too much of Maurice Sendak's work, and it might disappoint readers to discover writer/illustrator is NOT Sendak. THREE: The writing and topics [LibraryOfCongress subject headings are Adoption (totally cool) & Foundlings (kinda creepy)] are bizarre... perhaps another nod to Sendak... but something that just leaves me thinking... Author knows how to draw, but does he know how to write? How do these things get published?
