Rapsody - Laila’s Wisdom REVIEW

I was really anticipating this album. Rapsody is a rapper from North Carolina. She’s been putting in work for a while. he debut album, The Idea Of Beautiful dropped in 2012. I wasn’t in love with that album but I did really like her 2013 mixtape She Got Game. Her 2014 EP Beauty And The Beast was pretty good as well. I called last year’s Crown EP one of the best EPs of the year. With this new album, Rapsody is back and better than ever. I want to start off by saying that this is easily Rapsody’s best work and I love this album. I think the production on this album, done mostly by 9th Wonder and Khrysis. The title track contains a familiar sample that Blueprint used on his track Perspective. That sample works great with the line of piano and the off-kilter drums. There were quite a few beat changes on this album. Both beats on tracks like Chrome and Nobody are great. Pay Up’s production is funky and one of my favorite tracks. I absolutely loved Sassy, which had the beat of a vintage R&B track but Rapsody raps well over it. That beat on Black & Ugly (my favorite track on the album) had me nodding my head the whole time. The features are great on this as well. Kendrick Lamar does his thing on Power like usual but doesn’t overpower Rapsody. Anderson .Paak really tied Nobody together. He also appears on Oowee which was on the Crown EP. When I thought the features couldn’t get any better, one of my favorite rappers of all time steps up to the mic. Black Thought fucking snapped like always. BJ The Chicago did such a beautiful job on the hook on Black & Ugly. Honestly, I felt that Busta Rhymes could’ve done better on his verse on the album. The thing I like about the features is that they enhanced the track, not overpower it. The features were great but I think I still would’ve loved this album if they weren’t on the album because Rapsody did such an amazing job on this. Rapsody killed every verse on this album. She is creative, introspective, and not one-dimensional like some of these rappers out right now. She can rap her ass off. Although i loved this album, I do felt that it kind of lost steam around the end. Those tracks weren’t bad but didn’t match the amount of greatness as the rest of the album did. Laila’s Wisdom is hands down one of the best albums I’ve heard this year.
