“Devil worshipping cats”, 16th century
detail from the painting “Witches’ Cove” attributed to a follower of Jan Mandijn
Jan Mandijn (circa 1500–circa 1560): The Temptation of St. Anthony.
Those cats look absolutely delighted! This is an excerpt from a painting depicting a witches' festival - "The Cove of the Witches" (16th century) by Jan Mandijn's followers.
Very little is known about the painting itself. While it supposedly portrays a gruesome witches' ritual, the overall composition appears rather whimsical and hardly terrifying. It's hard to imagine 16th-century viewers reacting with anything other than amusement when looking at this - in fact, everything seems charming. Perhaps the innocent minds of that era would have been sufficiently frightened simply by hearing the word "witch."
Note: Jan Mandijn was a contemporary painter. This work is attributed to his followers, though even this attribution remains uncertain.
