Trudeau ejects Wilson-Raybould, Philpott from Liberal caucus

Former cabinet ministers will not be permitted to seek re-election under Liberal Party banner

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has expelled Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott from the Liberal caucus, saying that trust with the two former cabinet ministers has been broken.

Trudeau delivered the news to the national Liberal caucus in Ottawa Tuesday night, saying that the two could not stay on because they could not express confidence in the caucus.

"It's become clear that Ms. Wilson-Raybould and Dr. Philpott can no longer remain part of our Liberal team," Trudeau said.

Trudeau said he came to power determined to end the Liberal infighting that had dogged the party in past. He said civil wars damage parties because they make Canadians believe politicians care more about internal party politics than serving the public.

Philpott may run again under another party banner, denies being 'attention-seeking'

Looking to the future, Philpott said that she will decide whether or not she'll run again federally "in the next few weeks."

She said that while the door "at the moment" is closed to her running as a Liberal—the party she was elected under as a rookie in the 2015 campaign—she has "been approached by people of other parties and I’m weighing those options."

Philpott said she has had conversations with both the federal NDP and Green Party, but she could not run for the Conservatives, despite leader Andrew Scheer being one of her and Wilson-Raybould’s most vocal supporters over the last two months.

"There are too many policy differences with the Conservatives," she said.

"My constituents are telling me that they still want me to represent them and so if there’s some other path that I can find," Philpott said, adding that she will be door knocking in her riding to see if she could get support under a different party banner, and if so, which one.

Former Liberal cabinet ministers had spoken with Green Party Leader Elizabeth May about joining

Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott will not run as Green Party candidates in the fall election, CBC News has learned.

The two former Liberal cabinet ministers spoke with Green Party Leader Elizabeth May several times about possibly running for her party.

Wilson-Raybould also attended May's wedding in Victoria at the end of April, stoking rumours that she might jump to the Greens.

Wilson-Raybould currently sits as an independent MP for Vancouver Granvillle and Philpott for Markham-Stouffville.

The two women quit the Liberal cabinet over the government's handling of the SNC-Lavalin affair — which went public early in the year after Wilson-Raybould accused senior officials in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government of pressuring her inappropriately to allow the Quebec-based engineering firm to avoid a trial on corruption charges. They were subsequently kicked out of the Liberal caucus on April 2.

I have been considering the events that have shaken the Federal Government in recent weeks and after serious reflection, I have concluded that I must resign as a member of cabinet. Unfortunately, the evidence of efforts by politicians and/or officials to pressure the former attorney-general (Jody Wilson-Raybould) to intervene in the criminal case involving SNC-Lavalin, and the evidence as to the content of those efforts have raised serious concerns for me.

Jane Philpott, Treasury board president, in a resignation letter that it was "untenable" for her to continue in the cabinet because she lost confidence and could not defend the Government.
