The Ghost That Haunts Me

It’s quiet when Jasper gets home. He’s in a rhythm; from Jane’s body and into his own, watching the news on the Collective’s debut, and going through the motions in silence. It’s not unlike any other night. 

Every other night is filled with worry, after all. And thought the worry is different, anxiety is anxiety no matter its trigger. 

Jane was whispering in her sleep. Jane was whispering in her sleep. Jane, who was comatose, who was an empty husk, who was his puppet to manipulate as he saw fit. Whispered. In her sleep.

And Ortega heard her. 

“Afraid I’ll spill your secrets, darlin’?” Jane asks, her gentle southern drawl sweetening her voice like sugar in tea. 

“Yes.” Jasper tells her flatly. 

“Hey now, you know we have a deal. So long as you keep takin’ me out for fun nights and bright lights, I ain’t spillin’ jack shit.” Jane chuckles, reaching out to brush an icy hand against his stubbled cheek. 

She frowns, bowing her head as she removes her hand. “Not like I could stop ya, but…” 

Jasper reaches out for her, clasping her hands in his. “Stop me. Say the word and I’ll stop. I’ll find another body, I’ll–“

Jane shushes him with a finger to his lips. 

“Slow down, sweetheart.” She whispers. “I never said I wanted to stop you. I’m here to haunt you, not get in your way.”

“I shouldn’t have let you get hurt.” 

“Not like I could feel it.” Jane snorted. 

“But you still feel pain.”

“I feel yours. Don’t have a use for my own anymore.” 

“Did it hurt anyways? To see yourself bruised like that?” Jasper asks. 

“Not like seeing my body waste away with no one left to care about it hurt. Not like being trapped inside a prison of my own flesh and blood hurt. Not like seeing you in pain hurts.” 

Jasper bites his lip and bows his head and wonders when a ghost became his only friend. 

“I just…  I wish I could do something for you in return. Something that means something.”

The look on Jane’s face, much like her mind as a spirit, is unreadable. 

“... Let me worry about how you can do something for me, sweetheart. Right now, you need sleep.” 

She lays with him tonight. She leans in close and chills his skin and keeps him cool in the Los Diablos heat. She traces her fingers over the intricate lines of his tattoos and silently curses the system that broke them both.

Jasper pushes everyone away, Jane draws everyone in, and ortega and mortum are gonna be fuckin bamboozled if they ever find out that the two are one in the same

Jasper reserves feeing things for when he’s Jane.

Feeling things is easier in Jane’s body. Having relationships is easier in Jane’s body. Maybe he would’ve felt bad once, to use his puppet like this, but this puppet is a shell. A drag performance free from padding and perfume.

Sometimes it’s all too easy to forget what he says as Jane is not much different than what he thinks as Jasper. Sometimes it’s all too easy to forget that this is just a game.

Lying is not an unfamiliar art. Lying to himself, now that’s the hard part.
