--- What’s one of the most admirable things about New York?
It has been over a week since the Potomac disaster in DC, yet that does nothing to stop the bustling cities dotted all over the States from continuing on with business. After the mass panic and the flurry of news headlines, each one more grim than the last, New York is clumsily ( but steadily! ) recovering from the bone-chilling shock --- even when every screen is still plastered with grainy, trembling footage of the colossal monstrosities -Helicarriers, she later learned- smoking and crashing into DC’s beloved Potomac.
New York doesn’t stop for anything.
The street is moderately crowded tonight, with throngs of pedestrians making their way home from work. Helen is one of them, briskly walking as she’s talking to her phone, making a shopping list in her head, and making an actual chores list on her notebook. Usually, she can navigate the concrete jungle like a pro -- but obviously not today, since she runs into someone and sends her notebook, along with all the paper-clipped notes kept inside, flying like a papery storm. “Shit, sorry!” She stumbles back and grabs at her shoulder, where it felt like she collided with a hunk of metal instead of a jacket sleeve. “I’m sorry - you’re okay, right? God, you came out of nowhere like a ghost.”
