Steve wouldn’t admit it, but Marshal Fury’s interruption was a welcome relief from the fight he could feel building in his chest. He puffed it out a little in response before turning to his superior and offering a nod. It only lasted a moment before he felt the fight returning, and it took all Steve had not to fire out what exactly he wanted to say. Instead the blond pursed his lips and tilted his head lightly.
‘I hope you’ve been doing it for more than just stress relief,’ he countered as the small party began to make their way towards the gyms. ‘I’m afraid you won’t be getting much of that.’ Because he didn’t intend to go easy on the brunet, not in the least bit. There had to be some talent there for the Jaeger to be as successful as it was, and though there was a lot of stress that Steve could feel building up he also knew that this was going to be a serious matter.
No matter what Tony Stark made of it. So he followed the Marshal without waiting for any sort of response, the very beginnings of a smug smirk on his lips until his new partner decided to open his mouth again. In an attempt to cut it off, Steve turned his attention to Fury instead. ‘How long until we’ll be able to drift, anyway? They didn’t give me much detail back in Anchorage but I don’t need a lot of preparation.’
Which was true. He was compatible without whomever he needed to be compatible, even if it wasn’t as much as he had been with… Well. He didn’t need much time. Even if he wasn’t thrilled to be drifting with Tony based on what he knew, it meant he’d be in a Jaeger. And that was important.
Narrowing his eyes at the Captain’s blatant ignoring of what had been a fantastic blend of quips and bullshit, Tony tried to go down another route - only to be cut off again. Rude. Maybe this guy was less of an army clone than he thought. In all seriousness, Tony was usually a good judge of character, and he was getting a seriously different vibe than he had earlier.
Still an annoying one, though. Just in a different and more incomprehensible way.
Noticing that the Marshal had started speaking, Tony made sure to ignore it. Instead he fished out his phone again, opening the blueprints for a modification to Iron Patriot’s weaponry. For some reason, he was getting the sudden urge to add a shield.
‘First off, we’ll be testing suitability. Candidate trials usually tell us whether they’ll be any massive problem with drifting. Not that I think you’ll be the issue here, Captain-’ Fury shot Tony a nasty look - ‘but it’s always best to check. If nothing goes catastrophically wrong, we’ll be doing a test run first thing tomorrow morning. No time to waste.’
Yeah, his big suicidal all-guns-blazing plan. Exactly Tony’s cup of tea.
‘Question, Nicky. How first-thing is first-thing?’ Tony asked, stopping outside the doors to the gym. ‘I’m asking because I have...prior engagements.’
