Nomadic at Heart

Dreams consuming, heart wrenching, the demons from which she ran have caught up to her once more. She awoke in a cold sweat on that crisp morning, the residual desert freeze still evident from the frosted dew on her equipment and clothing, the blue of her fingertips like that of a bruise. The cold gripped for her, and she regained control by standing, knowing no other immediate impulse to immobility. Her eyes glanced to her clockwork timekeeper, its brass hinges white with chilled condensation.

“Half-past four” she droned to herself, looking east for a not yet existent sun. The desert sorroundings were barren, free of any civilized life apart from her long extinguished campfire and the bag she carried with her, still resting in the sands. Kneeling down, she once again hoisted her pack and peered westward, this was where salvation lies. Where, as legends tell, new life begins.
