janty four is up!
>>>> janty four <<<<
i had a lot of fun writing this, so i may go back and lengthen it, or maybe turn in into a jazz combo or full-length piece...
and, in case any y'all missed the rest of the series:
janty
janty 2
janty 3
@crushingonahorn you asked me recently to tag you for this, so here you go :D
other news:
i am in the painfully slow process of arranging george's dragon for full concert band, as well as working on two new pieces and, a jazz arrangement and a marching arrangement, and some busking combos. so i've got a lot of projects! i've got six more weeks of class so not much is going to get finished, let alone published, for another few months, but i'll keep y'all updated and continue plugging my stuff!
as always, i'm very open to constructive criticism :) please don't be mean tho i have like feelings and shit

THE JANTY MID
DEALING WITH THE JANTY MID
Well here's my go around with the "PRE PRODUCTION" Janty MID device. I didn't intend for this video to come across as a bash session so I apologize for that.
http://www.janty.com/en/mid-series
Just like in the video, I want to stress that EVERYTHING i'm speaking about in this video is based on a pre-production model of the Janty MID. I don't communicate with Janty, I don't know what ( if anything ) is changing on this device. I can only hope.
TLDW: wonky-blinking-light-counting-menu-system-from-hell , Shoddy feeling build quality ( although I believe this will be changing ) additional "module" software purchases in order to get full functionality of the device. I dislike these things.
The MID has PLENTY of power, Switching voltages and profiles "on the fly" might be a pain in the ass. But the ability to custom set a series of voltages is actually a pretty cool idea. I just wish the execution would have been a little better.
The software feels rushed, and the device feels rushed. BIG TIME.
Thanks so much for watching everyone!

Electronic Cigarette Post (descriptive, non?)
trilliath isn't the first person to ask, and i periodically get a handful of requests for suggestions on which e-cigs to use, if they're worth the money, etc., so I thought I'd make a general post.
the companies i'm linking to are the ones my husband and i use, and even though we did a bunch of research before settling on the stuff that we did i can't make any absolute guarantees. e-cig components come almost exclusively from china, their quality varies from shipment to shipment, and new things hit the market ALL the time. some US distributors have a really hard time keeping stock because e-cigs are banned or in the process of being banned in quite a few countries.
so, there's that.
and i can't elaborate, really, on the reasons why electronic cigarettes are considered worthy of banning...except to say that we, as adults who make decisions about our bodies, know the risks associated with smoking cigarettes and drinking caffeine or alcohol. these are legal substances that carry consequences for longterm/unmoderated use. no one is here is dumb enough to trot out the 'safe cigarette' argument, because there isn't one to be had.
(an example of the Janty eGo. . .which is what i use. each one breaks down into three components: a rechargeable battery, an atomizer, and a refillable cartridge. atomizers will burn out after a few months. we buy quite a few batteries and attys at a time.)
when we decided to try e-cigs, Mr L and i were very keen to use a system that employed as few chemicals as possible. the whole point was to be able to personally identify anything we were smoking, erm, vaping. . .something you'd be hard-pressed to do with any pre-packaged tobacco product. so, rather than buy into the e-cig products that required us to use pre-filled disposable cartridges, we went the DIY route.
we mix our own vaping liquid with nicotine solution, and add our own flavorings. it's better for our bodies, the environment, and our wallets. we use high quality flavors and propylene glycol (PG), but could easily use vegetable glycerin (VG) instead. both substances are rated safe for consumption by the FDA and already appear in small quantities in all sorts of food and pharmaceutical items. the nicotine comes pre-diluted (because un-diluted nic isn't legal. . .or safe), and we mix it with the PG in whatever ratio we think we need.
in my little bottle, i add 2ml of nicotine for 10 ml of PG.
(the case i commissioned from David, seri's guy. . .)
let me say that this option isn't for everyone. i tried three times to give up cigarettes before finding this solution. because in the end, i didn't want to give up nicotine (and didn't have to) but i DID want to give up the ten thousand other horrible things about cigarettes.
there are drawbacks to any vice, no matter the steps you've taken to moderate it. too much nicotine intake will make your heart race and make you sick. . .something i had to learn both as a smoker of tobacco and as a vaper now. because i don't have to get up and go outside i tend to puff on my e-cig absently for too long, longer than i would ever smoke a cigarette. my nicotine level is super low, but i can still make my own head swim if i'm not careful.
reactions to the e-cig phenomenon are pretty varied. i've read the arguments against electronic cigarettes and found them less than convincing on a number of levels. seek out the info on both sides, read a few forums, judge for yourself.
after four years, i've suffered zero notable physical side-effects. and i even started running two years ago. . .something i couldn't do in the ten years prior, during which i smoked . . .when i lost my sense of smell, my taste buds, my ability to breathe deeply. there were lots of things i enjoyed about smoking cigarettes. . .but there are more things i enjoy about NOT having them in my life any more.
like. . .how we're not spending $300 per month on cigarettes.
:o)

XTREME Vaping - this is where we buy the PG/VG liquid and nicotine solution in bulk. as well as little bottles for mixing and carrying. it's a FANTASTIC distributor for anyone doing DIY vaping.
Capella Flavor Drops - this is what we add to make the vapor sort of yummy. food-grade
JantyUSA - the eGo is the best e-cig out there (especially with the tank system) and Janty has been pretty great to us over the last four years. you can find Janty products/equivalents on other sites.
No really, I don't know why I ever smoked cigarettes when electronic cigarettes existed. I love this thing
