I have been able to get the full D.C. employment experience, by interning at Students For Liberty (SFL), a nonprofit located in the heart of Washington D.C. For the past two weeks I have worked with the data team to update their data system and research different liberty leaning nonprofits to see how they have been doing financially over the past 10 years. I have also learned a lot about how a nonprofit plans different conferences and events as well. My experiences at Salem have greatly aided me when discussing political philosophy during breaks and I have had the opportunity to share my opinions and contribute to the work space! The commute and weather may be a bit hectic, but I now know that I want to work in Washington D.C. in the future based off of my amazing experience so far at Students For Liberty.

This Jan Term I have the wonderful opportunity to intern with the staff of Apple Valley Animal Hospital in Hendersonville, NC. During the month I am shadowing Dr. Patrick McKee, DVM, Dr. Jennifer McKee, DVM, and Dr. Robin Howie. I am observing the day to day routines of Veterinary Medicine, including regular checkups and surgeries. I plan to apply to Vet School after I graduate from Salem, so having the opportunity to gain experience with small animals, equine medicine and care, and more is awesome!

Greetings from San José, Costa Rica! We have traveled to this beautiful country for Jan Term through CIS Abroad with the purposes of improving our fluency in the Spanish language and experiencing another culture. We are taking an intensive Spanish course at la Universidad Veritas, a small arts school with approximately 1,850 Tico (Costa Rican) students and 320 international students. During our free time we are traveling to places such as Bahia Ballena, a beautiful beach that is famous for whale watching and snorkeling; Puerto Viejo, a national park where we can hike to see sloths and monkeys; and Monteverde, which is known for its famous Cloud Forest Reserve! ¡Pura vida!

When most people hear of Sarasota, Florida, they think of the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus. I was able to land an internship at the Ringling Museum's Circus Archives with my background of working in Salem's archive department as a work-study student. I brought important skills from work-study to my internship, such as the ability to understand terminology like “metadata” and “digitizing” and I have been able to both broaden my understanding and focus. A current project I am working on is digitizing a photo album from 1903. The photographs were taken by a man hired by Ringling to go to India to take pictures of the clothing, people, culture, parades, and decoration in order to inspire American circuses at the time to be more international. In the process I have learned how to use many important computer programs in the archiving industry that will set me apart from other people applying for an archiving job in the future. I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful and helpful experience.
