On the Reclamation of Slurs
For my father’s generation gay guys were a thing to be abhored. Lesbians did not exist, nor did any other letters of the alphabet. Many and varied were the words and phrases used but there is one I remember that I see ‘unclaimed’. It is 'bent’ as in 'bent as a nine-bob note’. Explanation for younger folk and non-UK citizens: 'bob’ is the nickname for shilling, a predecimal twentieth of a pound; the smallest monetary note was the ten shillings.
Given the hoo-haa surrounding reclamation or otherwise of derogatory language may I suggest 'bent’ as an overarching, all-encompassing word for people who are in any way 'not straight’. Do you think it would help if I set up a gofundme thing?
As always, Vastderp, I remain your faithful etc.
