Long drive to Japuir

Didn’t do much today, woke up and had another delicious breakfast, and began the journey from Agra to Japuir.  It was incredibly cold and foggy this morning, a little over 40 degrees F, but it was nice again later in the day. I stopped at Fatehpur Sikri, an old deserted town of the Mughal Dynasty. Cars aren’t allowed close to the mosque for security reasons so I hopped on an electric bus for 10 rupees.  The driver didn’t seem to want to move, a bunch of people started yelling who knows what language and next thing I knew it was just me and a guide on the bus.  I got off and hitched a ride on the back of his motorcycle and saved myself 10 rupees. It was too cold to enjoy properly and I couldn’t get any clear pictures of the site due to the heavy fog, but I got to see Buland Darwaza, Jama Mosque, and the Tomb of Salim Chishti.  The tomb was exquisite, made of intricately carved white marble and the inner chamber were the body was housed was completely encased in mother of pearl. 

On the way out the guide that took me to the site showed me his families shop, they were stone craftsmen and made some really cool looking stuff. I ended up buying 2 elephants for a total of $20US, not bad considering each one took about 3 days to carve.  They were asking around $45US each but I’ve got hagglers blood running through my veins so I couldn’t resist the challenge.  I feel bad haggling with poor people who worked so hard on these items, but again, when the haggler spirit takes over, I have no control over my actions lol. The rest of the day was mostly driving through the countryside and looking out the window.  We drove through areas of extreme poverty, that really make you reflect on your own situation and appreciate the life you have all that much more. I saw men bathing in a well and one of them filled a pitcher with the same water and drank it down like it was nothing, I almost threw up.  There were homes and huts made of brush, animals and humans defecating near each other, and garbage everywhere you looked.  It is a different world here, I can not stress that enough.  I stayed at the Mansingh Palace in Japuir and it was very nice, much like the one in Agra.  Worked out at the extremely dated gym, and when I say dated...they had one of the stand up vibrating belt machines popular in the 30′s lol. I had the buffet tonight for around $10US, food is so cheap here, this is the pricing at a 4 star hotel.  It had all kinds of good vegetarian food, but I may have overdone it a bit. Gonna rest up for a long day of sightseeing in Japuir tomorrow.
