My parents, sister, and I have a fancy dinner every Valentine’s day evening. A fun tradition, we alternate between the men and women to prepare dinner. This year, my dad and I are making dinner. I made French onion soup to start, he’s going to make steak Diane for the main course, and for dessert I decided on an interesting poached pear treat I found online called Belle Hélène. Poaching pears in an orange/lemon syrup with cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and vanilla bean. So far, smells delicious. But the relevant part is that the dessert, made by the famous chef Auguste Escoffier, is named after this Offenbach opera. Since I’m not fan of opera, and always had a bias against Offenbach as being frivolous, I would have never listened to this piece. But I decided it would be fun to listen while I poach the pears. And how sweet it is; catchy choruses, heartfelt solos from the sopranos and tenors, so far a truly enjoyable work that sounds like it would be fun to watch on stage after a heavy dinner. If anything it goes to show you can’t judge something if you haven’t even tried it. Instead of sharing the entire opera, I’m sharing the energetic finale to the first act. And regardless if you have a special someone of not, I hope you all treat yo selves this Valentine’s day
