You were sitting in your room, minding your business, lazily scrolling through your phone when the sound of loud shouting spilled through the walls from the room next to yours.
You had only been back home from college for a few days, wanting to spend some time with your family. As much as you loved your independence, there was something comforting about being back...your own bed, familiar walls, the quiet that should have come with it.
But of course, your brother being the grown man that he is, the second he had friends over all sense of peace disappeared.
You let out an exaggerated sigh, tossing your covers off your legs before dragging yourself out of bed and storming over to his door.
“Yo Caleb! Quit being loud!” you called out, knocking firmly against his door.
You knew exactly why he was acting like this. Your parents were out for the day. If they were home, he wouldn’t dare make a sound. But with just you there? Oh, he didn’t care at all.
Laughter echoed from inside.
“Caleb, I’m being so serious, stop it right now!” you said again, raising your voice slightly.
Just as you lifted your hand to knock again, the door suddenly swung open and you froze.
“Jared?” you breathed, your eyes widening slightly in disbelief.
It had been years since you’d last seen him in person, since he left and built a name for himself in the NBA. A rising star.
But to you… he was still Jared.
The boy who used to sit on your couch, tease you endlessly, protect you like you were his own.
Back then it was always you, Caleb, and Jared. The three of you were inseparable. They teased you for being nerdy, sure, but they protected you like crazy. With them both being older, it always felt like you had two brothers instead of one.
You never forgot Jared though. Even from a distance you kept up, watching his games when you could, quietly supporting him in your own way.
But now…
Now you weren’t that little girl anymore.
And he could see it. Even if deep down you still felt like that same nerdy girl he remembered.
“Y/n… oh my God, it’s been too long,” he said, stepping forward before wrapping his arms around you, pulling you into a warm, tight hug.
The sudden closeness caught you off guard, his arms strong around you as he lifted you slightly off your feet, spinning you just enough to make you laugh.
When he pulled away, his hands lingered on your arms for a second longer than necessary.
“Damn…” he muttered, eyes scanning your face. “You changed. A lot.”
You let out a small laugh, reaching up and pinching his cheek like you used to.
“Yeah? And you haven’t? You still have that same boyish smile you used to have on your face all the time”
“Y'all stop flirting” Caleb’s voice cut in from behind, making you roll your eyes instantly.
You turned back to Jared, only to find his gaze already on you, focused, almost curious.
“So how have you been, J?” you asked, tilting your head slightly. “And what are you doing here? Don’t you have games or something?”
“Well the season just wrapped up so I’ve got some free time,” he said, leaning casually against the doorframe. “Figured I’d come see my boy.”
Then his voice dropped, just a little.
“Didn’t think I’d see you here though...”
“Yeah, I just got back from college,” you said, shrugging lightly. “Needed a break… but I came back to all this commotion.”
You shot Caleb a pointed look, earning a mocking expression in return.
“Anyway,” he said, pushing himself off the bed, “I’m hungry.”
You frowned. “Why are you looking at me for? There’s a whole kitchen downstairs.”
He clasped his hands together dramatically, stepping closer. “Please make tacos. Your cooking is too good, and I’ll mess it up.”
You shook your head, already giving in.
“Fine. But you both are coming downstairs. I want to catch up with you.”
As you walked ahead of them, Jared’s eyes followed you without him even realizing it.
Everything about you had changed, but not in a way that felt unfamiliar.
The way you spoke...soft, but confident. The way you carried yourself ike you knew exactly who you were.
Your hair framed your face perfectly, your features sharper, more defined and mature. And your body…
Yeah.
He definitely noticed that too.
Caleb caught the look, nudging him slightly with a raised brow, but Jared just shook his head, brushing it off as they followed you into the kitchen.
You moved around the kitchen with ease, pulling ingredients out and starting to cook, casually chatting with them both.
But you could feel Jared’s eyes on you.
They lingered just a second too long. Held eye contact just a bit deeper than he used to. His eyes traveled subtly, but just enough for you to notice.
So you decided to test it.
“Do I have something on my shirt?” you asked suddenly, glancing down.
“Nah,” he said quickly, his eyes snapping back up to meet yours. “You’re good.”
A small smirk tugged at his lips.
You turned away, hiding your own smile.
Yeah… he’s definitely staring.
A few minutes later, you were digging through the fridge, growing more frustrated by the second.
“You good?” Caleb asked.
“No,” you sighed. “I forgot peppers and cheese. Like how did I forget the most important ingredients?”
“I can go get it,” he offered.
“If you don’t mind?” you said quickly.
“Say less. Give me 30.”
“Want me to come?” Jared asked, shifting slightly.
“Nah you’re good. Stay here, keep her company. I gotta make a detour anyway,” Caleb said, already grabbing his keys and heading out.
The door shut behind him.
And suddenly, the house felt… quieter.
You wiped your hands on a towel, placing it down before walking over and sitting next to Jared, the space between you smaller than before.
“I can’t even finish the food now,” you sighed, leaning back slightly. “I’m so annoyed at myself. But I swear I bought them yesterday”
He let out a soft chuckle.
You turned your head toward him. “What’s funny?”
“You,” he said simply. “You’re still the same.”
“And you’re still the same too, laughing at me for no reason,” you shot back, nudging him lightly.
“I’m just playing,” he said, his tone softening. “You’re cute.”
He paused like he heard himself.
“I mean… you’ve grown up. You look really good.”
You smiled, a little amused by his sudden shift.
“Jared, it’s okay. I know what you meant.”
Now it was your turn to really look at him.
“…you look good too,” you murmured, your eyes tracing his features, his jaw, his lips, the way his curls sat neatly.
He raised a brow, leaning just slightly closer.
“Oh yeah? What changed?”
You hesitated, your gaze flickering away for a second.
“Your hair looks… healthy?” you said, unsure.
He burst out laughing.
“Really? That’s what you got for me?”
“No...okay your skin is clearer, I like the goatee, and…” you trailed off, your cheeks warming slightly, “your eyes…are dangerous”
“Oh yeah?” he murmured, his voice dropping as he leaned in closer.
Then softer “You don’t just look pretty… you look beautiful.” he spoke, “I can’t keep my eyes off you”
Your hands flew up to your face instinctively feeling your cheeks heat up.
Before you could hide, his hands gently wrapped around your wrists, pulling them down slowly.
“Don’t do that,” he murmured.
His voice was lower now. Rougher.
His hand slid from your wrist to your jaw, guiding your face gently back toward him.
Your breath hitched as his eyes dropped to your lips.
Then back to your eyes.
He leaned in slowly, giving you time to pull away.
“J… we shouldn’t,” you whispered, your voice barely there. “Caleb’s gonna be back.”
“I know,” he said quietly. “But I really want to.”
His nose brushed against yours, soft, hesitant.
Then his lips, barely grazing yours.
“Fuck…” he whispered. “I really really want to...”
Your eyes traveled down to his lips, he had his bottom lip tucked between his teeth as he looked down at your own. This made you close the distance instantly as you felt his need.
The kiss started slow… soft, then quickly deepened.
His hand moved to your waist, pulling you closer. You melted into him instantly.
When he stood bringing you with him, your body pressed against his completely.
This felt right.
When you finally pulled away, your heart was racing.
“You know I had a crush on you when we were kids?” he said.
You blinked. “There’s no way. You treated me like a little sister.”
“Because Caleb would’ve killed me,” he laughed. “But now? I’m grown. I can like who I want.”
“Alright, alright, Mr. Lover Boy… come here,” you said, your voice laced with a playful challenge as you gestured for him to lean down.
He didn’t hesitate.
The moment your lips met again, the kiss was deeper this time, more certain, more intense, like neither of you wanted to hold back anymore.
His hands found your waist first, before sliding lower as he pulled you closer. In one smooth motion he lifted you up, your breath catching slightly as your hands instinctively came up to grip his shoulders.
Your legs wrapped around him without thinking, holding him close as he carried you to the counter, sitting you down gently but keeping no distance between you.
You pulled him back in instantly, your fingers curling slightly against his jaw as you deepened the kiss, tilting your head just enough to melt into him completely.
It felt overwhelming in the best way.
“Mmm…” he murmured against your lips as he pulled back just slightly, his breath warm against your skin. “You taste so good.”
His lips were flushed, slightly glossy from yours, his bottom lip caught between his teeth as he looked at you like he was still deciding whether to kiss you again.
You couldn’t help but laugh softly, reaching up to wipe the faint shine from around his mouth.
“Relax,” you teased, brushing your thumb across his lip. “You’re leaving evidence.”
His eyes didn’t leave yours.
“So… who’s telling Caleb then?” you added, raising a brow.
“It's not gonna be me” you said quickly, holding your hands up in surrender before he could even answer.
He let out a laugh, shaking his head as you both broke into quiet giggles, the tension easing just enough to make it feel light again.
Still, neither of you moved far.
You stayed there for a while. Talking, teasing, stealing soft kisses in between like you were making up for lost time without even realizing it.
What you didn’t know though was that Caleb knew exactly what he was doing.
The “forgotten” cheese and peppers?
Yeah...those were never actually missing.
He just needed an excuse to leave.
And maybe, just maybe, give the two of you the chance you didn’t even realize you needed.
I hope you enjoyed!!!
