I am always happy to admit I was wrong
I was wrong about Guido Fawkes.
He is far more than a prick. He is a hypocritical prick.
“Exposing the truth of parliamentary plots” is essentially just a cover for “Tory suck up machine of the highest order”.
He twists his words, bends the story just enough to claim it can be the truth, but he leaves out the most salient facts and important details.
“....asked for an orgy with Girls Aloud.....” sounds damning, but if I posted a blog in here saying “Wow - the girl who plays Sophie Bates, I’d like to spend a night with her” - is that me asking to sleep with Sophie, or just indulging in a passing fantasy?
Now - don’t get me wrong. If he (Fawkes) was doing proper investigative research, getting proper evidence and posting proper stories, then I would have some level of respect for him.
But what he does is the worst sort of toxic “journalism” that is not good for our society, or our culture. Posting political stories out of context, posting BANNER HEADLINES IN BOLD TEXT without any explanation for them, without going into any of the details or the back story, is incredibly dangerous and irresponsible.
You may be thinking I am just saying this because I am on the left of politics, and he almost exclusively goes after the left, but no - if he was doing this to the right wing as well I would be equally offended and critical as well.
The most important thing in a democracy is a well informed electorate. One that has all the facts, that has both sides of a story. That understands the argument and can make a fully informed decision.
And a critical part of this process is a free and responsible press - one that will present both sides of the argument, in a full detail.
But if websites like Fawkes will only present snippets, so that people get a warped, distorted view, then the public will never get the full picture and instead will get a warped, distorted view of the truth. And as goes the public, so goes the government. If we have a public with a warped distorted view of the world, we will get a warped, distorted government.
The most recent tweets are about Hamas praising Corbyn (and thereby managing to call him a terrorist sympathiser and an anti-Semite in one breath), and repeated stories about Mr O’Mara (all in BANNER CAPITALS with very little context attached).
I just think it is dangerous. For all of us.
