Possessively is such an interesting word. I just wrote it in a sentence where a character is guarding something and realised—wait! is this character guarding it like it is his possession or guarding it like it has possessed him?

AND IT COULD BE BOTH! Like from character's perspective, it is absolutely the former (cough windbag cough) but from another character's perspective they see this as a concerning obsession (we all know who I'm talking about).

I know traditionally possessive is absolutely the former, but I think the latter could be something really interesting to explore and more people should do so.

What a lovely surprise!  Jensen and Jared made a sneaky appearance at the Kansas campfire sing-a-long and we got to watch them just chat with Kansas and hang out.  It’s hard to tell if Misha’s back in Vancouver just yet (I’m pretty sure not yet, though), but Misha just couldn’t seem to take his eyes off Jensen (not that I can blame him, really).

Something I noticed almost the first time I listened to Warrior of the Mind is that Athena says, "Have you forgotten your purpose? Let me remind you."

And then immediately launches into a list of HER titles. It really builds on the fact that Odysseus was a means to an ends (at first) and all she was interested in was what he could do for her.

I think Ody had a point with the whole 'selfish and prideful and vain' thing. And guess what hits harder than an insult? One you know is true.

I want to see Athena struggle against her own nature. I want her to realise what her mistakes were and pledge to be better. I want to see her try and try and try and still mess up. I want her to give up and believe she'll never be able to change. I want her to beat herself up about it. I want her to despair that even with her immortality, she'll never be able to create a better world because of who she is. I want to see her break down completely. I want her to be comforted. I want her to realise that being a better person isn't about brute forcing. I want her to learn that being a better person is about supporting and being supported by a community who are all trying to be better.

Anyone else, or is this just me?

Update on Put Your Logic Aside

Good news: I reworked chapter 5 and it's come out to 4k words in the end.

Are the characters consistent? Is the style? Has my other WIP affected how I write? Idk, that's tomorrow's problem.

I've decided I'll post the chapter on Christmas, so you can look forward to that.

Chapter 4 is kicking my butt; I have rewritten that thing 4 times now. I wanted to make it the fluff before the Polyphemus—and clearly that was a mistake. ANGST IS POSSESSING ME AND I CANNOT HOLD IT BACK. ALL THE DADDY ISSUES ARE COMING OUT. FUCK, ATHENA, CAN YOU GO MORE THAN A DAY WITHOUT BEING TRIGGERED BY SOMETHING AND TRYING TO PUSH THROUGH THE PANIC ATTACK WITHOUT ACKNOWLEDGING IT?

Maybe the second half can be a little more light-hearted—

I actually got to an ending for Put Your Logic Aside that made me happy. I usually really struggle with endings, so I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm considering the first draft of that complete and will start to go over chapters and post them here and there across the next few weeks (hopefully)

Question: what would Odysseus be feeling if a random crew member or two, instead of Polities, had died in Polyphemus' cave?

He would still be grieving, but I doubt that grief would manifest as a desire to extend mercy. He thought he'd get home without losing a single man and now that chance has been ripped away from him. Desire for revenge would absolutely cloud his mind, but he'd quickly realise the need to protect the rest of his men and pivot towards that.

Polyphemus is blind and no threat, he wouldn't worry about leaving him alive. Then when Athena stops him, instead of saying, "What good would killing do when mercy is a skill more of this world could learn to use? My friend is dead, our foe is blind, the blood we shed, it never dries. Is this what it means to be a warrior of the mind?"

He'd say something like, "You want me to risk more men? Fuck no, I've got to get these people home. What can one little cyclops do?"

And then turn to Polyphemus and go, "Hey, cyclops! I gave you the chance to end this peacefully! You were the one to make things violent! You killed my men! I'm leaving you alive so you can remember them! Remember us! Remember me!" and drop his full address, security number, and computer password as a "watcha gonna do about it champ?" moment.
