For the Red Bird's Nest server Halloween mini-event, Costumes and Creatures
Prompt - Prince/Princess.
Leila’s soft humming filled the room while Tim braided her hair.
“Then,” Tim went on, “the princess broke down the door that kept her from the world. She ran down the stairs without looking back. She was a princess, a warrior. Raised by the greatest warriors, daughter of a god. She didn’t need anyone to save her. The end.”
His daughter laughed, bright and thrilled. “That’s not how stories go, dada.”
Tim shook his head, completely certain. “It is. Ask Wonder Woman. She’s a princess and she’s very powerful.”
Leila laughed again, teasing. “She’s not real. Aunt Diana makes those stories up.”
Tim covered her mouth, eyes wide in mock shock, though his lips trembled with a held-back laugh. “Don’t say such things. You’ll break your dad’s heart.”
Leila squealed, covering his hand with both of hers, eyes full of amusement. Just then, the door swung open. Lance stepped in, sword raised, scanning the room.
“Where is the terrible dragon that dares disturb the peace of my city?”
Leila dropped Tim’s hand and jumped up. “I’ll help! I’ll help!”
She grabbed her magic wand and lifted it above her head.
“By the power of being a princess, I demand an answer!” She pointed the wand toward Jason, who stood behind Lance, amused. “Where is the dragon, good knight?”
Jason, of course, knelt on one knee, bowing his head solemnly. “He’s right beside you, Princess. Timothy is a dragon hiding among our people.”
Lance and Leila gasped, staring at him like he had committed high treason. Lance pointed his sword at him, Leila followed with her wand.
“Unmask yourself, dragon!” Lance shouted. “Your king commands it!”
Leila frowned, side-eyeing him. “You can’t be a king. You have to be a prince.”
Lance huffed, clearly annoyed. “I don’t want to be a prince! I’ll be a knight!”
“Dad’s a knight!” Leila shouted back.
Jason stepped in before the argument could go any further. “Watch out for the dragon, Princess!”
Leila spun around just in time to dodge his hands, laughing as she stumbled back.
“Help! He’s trying to kidnap me!” Her words came out between bursts of laughter as Tim moved behind them, trying to catch them.
Lance pointed his sword, putting Leila behind him. “Knight, I order you to stop the dragon!”
Jason looked like he’d been waiting for that cue. He lunged forward. “Leave him to me, Prince!”
Tim wasn’t quick enough. Red-faced from laughing, he was caught and lifted onto Jason’s shoulder.
“You’ll never stop—!” His words broke off when Jason started spinning. Tim yelped, clutching Jason’s cape. “You wicked knight! I curse you!”
“No ruthless dragon will ever harm my children,” Jason said in mock severity.
The dizziness hit fast. Tim felt too old for this. His vigilante days were two kids ago.
He patted Jason’s back weakly, and Jason stopped immediately. Tim pressed a hand to his mouth, swallowing down the nausea climbing up his throat.
Jason set him down at once, concern replacing the laughter. “You okay?”
Tim didn’t get the chance to answer before Leila screamed with delight.
“Daddy has a new dragon in his tummy!”
Jason’s jaw dropped, while Lance shouted beside her, “It’ll be a knight, not a dragon!”
The kids’ voices faded for a moment, leaving the two of them in their own small bubble.
“Are you sure?” Jason asked quietly.
Tim nodded, lowering his hand to smile at him. “Completely.”
Jason mirrored his smile, raising a hand to brush his cheek. “A new princess?” he asked softly.
“Or a little prince,” Tim replied in the same tone.
“Or a dragon!” Leila added quickly.
“No!” Lance protested. “A knight!”
Jason and Tim shared a small laugh, letting the warmth and calm of the moment settle around them.

Leila was going to be named Keila, but my finger slipped on my phone and the letter changed. And it stuck. If fate wanted it that way, so be it.
It wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but I’ve been kind of blocked—at least I managed to get the idea out somehow.
If it feels like the kids talk a little too well, it’s because they’ve spent too much time with Damian. He’s the favorite uncle.
