MUTATION
Crocodilian Mimicry: Rather than being born with a mutated gene, Jason is the product of a secret military project. Athletic, healthy, and a part of the military’s elite Jason was a prime candidate for the project known to a select few as Project Proteus. At first, Jason believed the project to be just as it was advertised: a way for the military to physically and psychologically enhance already gifted talents. Little did he know, though, that these enhancements consisted of splicing animal DNA, specifically reptilian in Jason’s case, with human DNA – a ploy to create a line of super-soldiers whose sole duty was to limit the amount of casualties of war. As a result of these experiments, Jason is capable of mimicking the physiology of a reptile, more specifically a crocodile: his senses, as well as his predatory instincts, have been enhanced, he is capable of regulating his body temperature, and he possesses the ability to adapt to wetland areas.
BACKGROUND
Jason Tai Asoau – known simply by his middle name Tai to family and close friends – was born on the US Naval Station Tutuila in Pago Pago Harbor on the island of Tutuila in the American Samoa. As the only child of Navy sailors, Jason was accustomed to the military life: the constant moving, the need for discipline, the lack of stability. In fact, he only ever truly felt at home in the water. An avid surfer, Jason was always more comfortable alone on the beach, just the waves and his board, than among other children his age. Sure, the ocean was unpredictable and dangerous, but there was a sort of rhythmic dependability to it that humans seemed to lack.
His decision to enlist in the Navy shortly after graduating from High School didn’t come as much of a surprise to those who truly knew him. Disciplined, loyal, and respectful of authority, it was not long before Jason was noticed by those in power, and recommended as a suitable candidate for Project Proteus, an under-wraps military project bent on the production of super-soldiers.
Jason is highly disciplined, a soldier who respects the authority of those in power. He is easily impressed by power, but loyal only to the men of his unit, men whom he considers to be brothers and would gladly give his life for. For Jason, the mission will always come first, even at the cost of innocents. Ostensibly, this became the reason for Jason’s dishonorable discharge. A soldier without a mission, the lost soul relocated to New York’s Mutant Town where he took a position as a security guard at a local bank*, a job which he hopes will restore his sense of self and duty.
