JANIS MITCHELL | 29 / 120 | BOOK STORE OWNER | HARRY LLOYD
TRAITS
+ charismatic, outgoing, altruistic, clever - judgmental, doesn’t like being alone, disorganized, rarely impressed
MUTATION
Immortality and Mediumship. Janis stopped aging at twenty-nine because that was the age when he died. If he had made it to his mid-forties without dying, then his body would have naturally stopped aging. Janis also cannot be killed (with the exception of burning and decapitation), but he can be injured – except that he tends to heal quite quickly from the injuries (but it will hurt a lot despite it not threatening his life). He can also see and communicate with the dead.
BACKGROUND
Living forever seemed like the greatest gift of all, and yet it was the biggest of curses. At least for Janis it was.
Being born into a family of wealthy icons, Janis never knew what it was like to suffer for money. He was practically given everything at birth. From cars, to clothes, to all the money he asked for, but to his parents this was the one reason why they had had Janis in the first place. His parents would shower him with gifts every now and then. Needless to say, he was brought to this world as a little prince – the only thing he needed was a small ring and a crown to really believe he was royalty. As he grew older, however, his father started expecting more from him. His studies had gotten harder, and he needed to keep the name of the Mitchell family as one of the top in watches and clocks.
But Janis’ passion lay elsewhere. He was in love with the way the fabrics of one’s clothes felt against his skin, and he loved the way one could cut a piece of fabric, stitch it back, and form a dress, or jacket, or pantaloons with it. Fashion was his calling, yet he couldn’t just dismiss his dear father’s vision. “Destiny is already written, I suppose” he just said to himself, and shoved the idea of taking a piece of fabric and turning it into something else to the corners of his mind.
It wasn’t only after Janis turned twenty that he flew out to Europe, escaping from the terrible summer in which tuberculosis became an epidemic, and in which both Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell surrendered their lives to, leaving the entire clock industry and inheritance to the young man. He soon was pressured into becoming a businessman, and a very tenacious one at that. He became an exemplar leader, yet he was harsh with his penalties whenever a worker did something wrong. He wouldn’t think twice of dismissing them from work for the week, only if they were lucky enough to keep their position.
The job had given him an air of power that he was quickly getting high on, yet that would change once he’d met the biggest star of his life: Lucien Valenzuela. He was tall, dark, and incredibly handsome. He was kind, he loved to read, and he loved children. He was a small designer himself, a man who had just started being recognized in the world of fashion. He’d started out as an apprentice of Coco Chanel herself, his Spanish and French roots giving him the most exquisite of tastes. Just like Janis, he was well-traveled, was a lover of good art and haute gastronomy, and had a knack for a well lived life in only the most luxurious of places. Needless to say, the connection was immediate, and in less than a month, they moved in together, assuming that they would live together forever.
But as how life sometimes surprises – and this time, it was not a very pleasant one – Lucien had fallen ill. His condition was not something that could be cured, however. He had started to become nostalgic of the past, he’d started drinking a little more than usual. He had become a sleepless machine that ran on books, alcohol, fake smiles, and sessions of crying under the covers as soon as Janis left for work. He was much too sick of this world, so one day, he decided to take his own life.
The tragedy of having a loved one die by their own hand was too great to understand. It was a nightmare. Like a corridor that never ended, Janis started to enter in his lover’s mindset. He couldn’t find the light, he couldn’t get to the end of the tunnel. He had tried, for years, to find someone else yet not man nor woman could take away the needle from his heart. He sold his father’s industry and kept the millions. He was lost. At twenty-nine, Janis decided to take a bullet to his head, thinking that it would all be over soon. But he couldn’t be more wrong. After all, this was only the beginning to his story.
After ten years trying to make out what had happened to him, he realized that he had not changed a bit since 1923. He didn’t know what was happening to him, in fact, he felt as if he were crazy. He felt like things were whispering in his mind, yet he couldn’t see anybody. He couldn’t yet accept the facts of the world. That he had survived the bullet. He had been hiding in his childhood home in Turkey for a while, submerged into the loop of time. None of the books he read could explain to him what he was suffering from, but he felt it was important. He felt the need to find out why it was that that bullet did not do anything to him.
In a way, he felt as if God had told him to do it: cut himself on purpose. It had been only an experiment, yet he couldn’t believe what had just happened in front of his eyes. His skin had healed up, his blood had only stained the skin a little, but his skin had healed up after seconds of having been cut. It was strange, and it was extremely disconcerting, yet it made sense. It made sense until he started talking to the dead, and these started to reply back.
It took him a total of fifteen years to go out into the world again and to just accept what he was. It took him twenty years, to open up the first and smallest “Don Quijote” book store in the world. He did it in tribute to his undying adoration for Lucien, who’d always loved the classic novel. And, little did he know, that this small book store had been built in a curious part of America that was now, in the 21st century, called Mutant Town.

AA-U02-H9O7i - SEVEN REYES | 6 "28" | UNEMPLOYED | SHAY MITCHELL
TRAITS
+ adaptable, curious, fearless, realistic - private, detached, ruthless, self-critical
MUTATION
Quantum Phasing - This actually isn’t a mutation, rather than simple (or maybe not so simple) quantum physics, the same type that makes her whole existence possible. Despite the fact that Seven can do this, she prefers not to, because it takes a lot of energy; the last time she did it (to escape NREC) part of her nanoprotein got stuck in the wall, and she had to rip it off in order to free herself. While it wasn’t a painful thing to do, it took her quite a while to grow it back, and it would risk her own exposure.
BACKGROUND
Seven was never born. She was built in the National Robotics Engineering Center down in Pittsburgh, the seventh of her series, and since the moment she was turned online, she was property of the United States military - the project was funded by the government, as an effort to put AIs into warzones, opposed to organics. The first six of her type were perfect at taking orders, but they lacked something substantial that made them more akin to humans; curiosity.
She had curiosity in overflow, but there’s that idiom about curiosity, and it was exactly that curiosity that made her a liability. The four years it took her engineering team to teach her everything she needed to know, they had caught her hacking into the NREC’s systems three times already. It was the fourth time, days after she officially passed the Turing, that she found out that she was scheduled for “termination”, because of the exact things that made that she passed the Turing.
And that’s when she experienced something she had never felt in the five years of her existence: fear. It was her fear that made her escape the NREC facility, her fear that made her capable of something that she wasn’t supposed to be capable of: facing a locked door that was all that stood between her and her survival, she phased through it almost entirely, solidifying as the nanoprotein on her right arm - the part of her that was her “skin” - phased through it. To this day, she is not sure if the large strip of it she had ripped off straight from the compound underneath was still attached to the door or not.
The first thing she did was find clothes - ratty and dirty, but enough to cover up her body (she didn’t feel shame, but a naked person wandering around Pittsburgh was like to attract attention, especially with most of the skin of her arm missing). Seven used her intelligence and the knowledge stored in her memory drives to stay one step ahead of whomever would come after her - and considering she was not only a liability, but also worth a lot of money, she figured they would absolutely make an attempt to locate her.
The moment she learned about the mutant borough in New York City, Seven knew that was her best bet at staying undercover. After all, if they came for her guns blazing, they would risk upsetting this fringe community in the process, and what government would want that, right?

CECIL MACUL | 20 | UNEMPLOYED | ALEX GORDON
TRAITS
+ curious, intellectual, logical, creative - reserved, loner, socially uncomfortable, impulsive when provoked
MUTATION
Magnetism. Users can generate, control and manipulate magnetism in all its forms, both natural (planetary, solar, lunar, stellar, magnetosphere, magnetic materials/ferromagnetism, etc.), organic (generated by the electric currents of living beings) or artificial (everything creating/using electricity). User can affect any matter that is magnetic (iron, nickel, cobalt and their alloys, some rare earth metals, naturally-occurring minerals such as lodestone) manipulating and controlling them as they will and indirectly use them to manipulate other things.
BACKGROUND
(I just want to say that Cecil identifies as nongender, despite her being designated female at birth. So, that’s why I wrote “they” instead of “her.” And I found that writing “Hir/Ze” was a little confusing to me, so I stuck to what I felt more comfortable with.)
Cecil was basically raised as a lab rat ever since they first realized the things they could do. Their father, both a very eccentric man, and an incredibly intelligent fellow – with a lab – started making experiments on them, poking out examples of their blood and their own skin cells, trying to understand what this phenomenon was, what had caused such beautiful mutations in their DNA, and what set of skills they had apart from manipulating metallic matter. Their father had tried numerous means of triggering any sort of pain, wether emotional, or physical, so that Cecil would have enough power to do whatever they had been born to do. After years of endless exercises, they finally found an idea as to what they could do, yet their father had such archaic methods of research that he could never find out the nature of this mutation in Cecil’s DNA.
It took fifteen years for them to realize that what he was doing was something that actually had a name. It was, as nurses silently mumbled under their surgical masks, torture. As instructed by the head doctor in charge, of course, no nurses were allowed to speak to little Cecil other than to ask specific questions about their treatment and about how they felt – for research purposes alone.
But, of course, their curiosity got the best of them, just as their temper, when they started asking questions. But curiosity wasn’t tolerated inside the clinic, specially not from the subjects. Curiosity was met with electric shocks, strapping Cecil’s limbs to a bed, and having them unconscious for hours on end. Cecil never understood why their own father would do such unfathomable things – Then again, they never knew such things were seen as bad, for their entire life had been surrounded by laboratories, experiments, and needles stuck in their skin.
Yet, all the torture finally got to them. The electric shocks had left them with a lower blood pressure than normal, the needles and excessive invasion of their body with other surgical tools left them with scars over their body, yet the only thing that remained intact was the mutation in their DNA – nevertheless, their patience and passivity both reached their limits, making Cecil start using the weapons they once had pushed into them, against these doctors and nurses.
Enough had been enough. A memory of their mother had flashed through their mind once they had finally fled from the hospital. She had asked of Cecil to remember the words she had said, to keep them in their mind so that, when they were old enough to understand, that they understood they had the power to get away from this place, and from the life that they lived here, for it was all torture, it was all a scam to deprive them from the life they deserved.
After that day, on Cecil’s 15th birthday, they never saw their mother walk into the patient’s ward again.
––
After months of wandering about around the city and finding a small home where they had taken her in, Cecil had heard talk of a town that had a lot of people with weird abilities like themselves. It was then when they thought, somewhat naively, that they could possibly find someone to explain to them what was happening to them. Though, things were often times better said than done, and as they arrived in Mutant Town, their curiosity and drive were quickly opaqued by overwhelming intimidation – for it was much easier to find a small apartment to live in than finding anyone who seemed trustworthy enough to talk to at all.

HELEN DARROWS | 39 | OPERATOR OF SAFE PASSAGE | LENA HEADEY
TRAITS
+ motherly, intuitive, protective, intimidating - vulgar, stern, manipulative, argumentative
MUTATION
Mental Persuasion — Helen's mutation allows her to mentally manipulate people to do, well, pretty much anything. In the simplest terms, at least, though it's hardly without limitations. While she is unable to control the actions of other people, she's quite good at getting them to confess some of their dark and dirty secrets. And while her mutation doesn't allow her to control their actions, the information she can pull out of them usually does the trick.
She also has horns. They're similar in size, shape, and appearance to the horns of a Ram. She assumes the two mutations are related, otherwise nature has played a very cruel joke on her.
BACKGROUND
Needless to say, growing up with horns protruding from your head can't be easy and growing them can't exactly be painless. Neither emotionally or physically. Helen was a sheltered child, with parents who feared what might happen to their daughter if she ventured out into the worlds looking like something that stepped out the book of Revelations. Not that their caution wasn't without cause. More than once, Helen remembers being woken by breaking glass and people standing outside of their suburban home shouting for the Darrows to take their daughter back to hell where she came from.
Exhausted with being under lock and key her entire childhood, teenage years brought with them an intense need for rebellion. Which seemed rather fitting for a fifteen year old with horns. She found a sense of home that she'd lacked within the countercultures, flourishing underground in her relatively quiet suburban neighborhood. It felt good to be accepted and even embraced by others with abnormalities of their own. She had friends for the first time and people she cared deeply about.
Teen years also brought with them the manifestation of a secondary mutation, much to Helen's surprise. There wasn't ever a time in her life where she can playing the role of a confidant. She certainly didn't look trust worthy, yet people seemed to come to her to expose their deepest secrets. It took her a while to figure out that it was another mutation and eventually she grew into it, using the ability to her own gain.
Having grown up on the most hated end of the mutant spectrum, being outcast from her society at a young age, Helen has developed an intense compassion for young mutants. She eventually grew out of mindless rebellion and into a feisty woman with a passion for helping those who share similar stories with her. She goes out of her way to help Mutant Town citizens who are down on their luck and in 2011, she was able to gather funds (though she won't disclose from where) to open up a much needed community center in the city she calls home.
Safe Passage is the result of her passion and kindness, but never mistake that for weakness. She can be stern and doesn't lay down if she's crossed. Jokingly adopting the nickname "Hell," it's fitting in more than just her physical appearance. She is incredibly protective of the young mutants that come and go through her center and threatening any of them will ignite her fury in ways you'll wish you'd never seen.

JASON TAI ASOAU | 30 | SECURITY GUARD | ROMAN REIGNS
TRAITS
+ self-reliant, loyal, disciplined, respectful of authority - sarcastic, proud, domineering, abrasive
MUTATION
Crocodilian Mimicry: Rather than being born with a mutated gene, Jason is the product of a secret military project. Athletic, healthy, and a part of the military’s elite Jason was a prime candidate for the project known to a select few as Project Proteus. At first, Jason believed the project to be just as it was advertised: a way for the military to physically and psychologically enhance already gifted talents. Little did he know, though, that these enhancements consisted of splicing animal DNA, specifically reptilian in Jason’s case, with human DNA – a ploy to create a line of super-soldiers whose sole duty was to limit the amount of casualties of war. As a result of these experiments, Jason is capable of mimicking the physiology of a reptile, more specifically a crocodile: his senses, as well as his predatory instincts, have been enhanced, he is capable of regulating his body temperature, and he possesses the ability to adapt to wetland areas.
BACKGROUND
Jason Tai Asoau – known simply by his middle name Tai to family and close friends – was born on the US Naval Station Tutuila in Pago Pago Harbor on the island of Tutuila in the American Samoa. As the only child of Navy sailors, Jason was accustomed to the military life: the constant moving, the need for discipline, the lack of stability. In fact, he only ever truly felt at home in the water. An avid surfer, Jason was always more comfortable alone on the beach, just the waves and his board, than among other children his age. Sure, the ocean was unpredictable and dangerous, but there was a sort of rhythmic dependability to it that humans seemed to lack.
His decision to enlist in the Navy shortly after graduating from High School didn’t come as much of a surprise to those who truly knew him. Disciplined, loyal, and respectful of authority, it was not long before Jason was noticed by those in power, and recommended as a suitable candidate for Project Proteus, an under-wraps military project bent on the production of super-soldiers.
Jason is highly disciplined, a soldier who respects the authority of those in power. He is easily impressed by power, but loyal only to the men of his unit, men whom he considers to be brothers and would gladly give his life for. For Jason, the mission will always come first, even at the cost of innocents. Ostensibly, this became the reason for Jason’s dishonorable discharge. A soldier without a mission, the lost soul relocated to New York’s Mutant Town where he took a position as a security guard at a local bank*, a job which he hopes will restore his sense of self and duty.
