Delphiniums are bright blue in hue, towering in height and celebrated as the birth flower of July. Also known as larkspur, there are more than 400 varieties of delphinium, some of which are permanently flowering at Brooklyn’s Avenue U (Q) station. “Brooklyn Seeds” by Jason Middlebrook features local wildflowers that can be found near the station, growing in unlikely places like sidewalk cracks and through building gates.
Fun fact: The name delphinium comes from the Ancient Greeks who thought the shape of a new flower bud looked like a dolphin’s nose.
