Jasper, a town in Alberta, Canada, was recently taken over by a tragic wildfire. As of July 26, 2024 at least 30% of the town has been destroyed, 358 out of 1,133 structures, with 25,000+ residents being forcibly evacuated for safety.

The Alberta government had cut back millions in funding for wildfire preparedness programs, leaving residents of Jasper floundering with little to no support while the United Conservative Party of Alberta fumbled its way through an arbitrary Treasury Board process trying to justify their decision to wait seven days before responding to emergencies.

The wildfire that burned a third of the buildings in Jasper, Alta., to the ground is now under control, Parks Canada officials announced Saturday. "That means that the wildfire has received sufficient suppression action to ensure no further spread outside the defined perimeter of the fire," Landon Shepherd, a Parks Canada incident commander, told reporters.  The wildfire perimeter is an estimated 278 kilometres, while the area is estimated to be at 32,722 hectares. Smoke and flames will still likely be visible inside the fire's perimeter into early winter, Parks Canada says.

The Jasper Fires

I've been through forests after a forest fire before. But never quite like this. A little taste tester before we get to the main event when it hit me how big this fire Actually was. Three of these photos are from the Fairmont Jasper Lodge just outside of town. Well. Whats left of the town anyway. They managed to save the lodge side of things. Just barely. Taken this year in April.

Idk how many people here are from Canada but the town of Jasper had about 50% of it burn down recently and the fires are still happening.

Jasper has been important to many people I know, my family would often stop by for an evening on out way home from B.C. for food and some fun in the hot springs. my best friend is really into snow boarding and really wanted to take me and some other to Marmot Basin. And the place was a beautiful town that gave of the vibe of a quaint village which always made it feel very welcoming and I think most of us know it won't be rebuilt that way no matter how much we beg for it.

it's awful and a lot of people honestly saw it coming, a lot of people I know are surprised it didn't happen sooner. but regardless of that I wanted to wish those who have lost homes and places that were so important to them the best of luck, it hurts and I can only imagine how much more it hurts for those who lived there, visited annually with friends, or got married there, best of luck to you all here's to hoping for the best moving forwards

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she'd like to see bus tours organized for evacuated residents of Jasper so they can see the damage a wildfire did to their town for themselves and know what to expect when they're eventually allowed to return home. Smith made the comments on her provincewide call-in radio show on Saturday, where she also told listeners she'd like temporary housing arranged for residents so they can live in the town while they rebuild their homes. Parks Canada has estimated 30 per cent of Jasper's structures were damaged by the wildfire, with 358 of the town's 1,113 structures destroyed. Smith, along with Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland and other dignitaries, toured the evacuated town on Friday, where they passed the charred remains of the home where Ireland himself grew up. More than 20,000 people in and around the town nestled in the Rocky Mountains four hours west of Edmonton were ordered to evacuate late Monday night due to fast-moving wildfires. Smith notes temporary housing was also used during the reconstruction of High River, Alta., after it suffered devastating floods back in 2013.
