A sneak peek of what's to come
Aswara Dance Company performing Nalinakanthi Jathiswaram for "Crossing Borders in Bharatanatyam" in 2014. I really like this camera angle because you get to see all the intricate patterns that have been choreographed into this piece.
Jathiswaram in Arabhi Ragam by Kieran/Noyze. Really digging the costume, it's perfect for an informal performance.
-___- ... I am SO MAD. That double turn at 1:18 is impressive. All the turns and spins were impressive... and the worst part is that the choreography looks so fun and energetic. sigh.
Loving the non-traditional choreography of this Jathiswaram in Kedara ragam. There's only a few straight forward adavus here; all the rest are imaginatively reinvented to create playful korvais. The graceful movements almost remind me of Mohiniattam. I might borrow those nadais in my future choreography, not gonna lie.
Practice video of the Ragamalika Jathiswaram.
Dancing as if a flower blooming "Alarippu"
Alarippu-
Alarippu means “Blooming”. A Dancer Moves her body from the top to the bottom. The flow of the movement starts with her eyes and neck, the next is her shoulder and arms, then moves the legs as if a flower blooms. The tempo changes into three levels; slow, middle, and Fast. A variety of rhythms are 3, 4, 5, 7, etc. A Nattvanngam(a pair of small cymbals) player conducts orchestra and play the rhythm according to how dancer stamps her feet. The Nattvangam player is called “Nattvanar”. The Nattvanar hums the combination of the rhythm called “Solkattu” like a voice performer. Then the dancer dances with the sound of Nattvangam and Solkattu. Alarippu is a pure dance consists with element of physical movements. Alarippu is a first dance item which Bharatanatyam dancer learns. Since its very basic, We don’t really get a chance to see in a performance by star dancers, but sometimes it is performed with a song. Famous Bharatanatyam dancer,Rama Vaidyanathan choreographed “Mayur(peacock) Alarippu” is a very unique but it based on traditional structure, and I became her fan at a moment!
Next item will be “Jatiswaram”.
An excerpt from the Jathiswaram in Kalyani Ragam. I adore videos that capture the classroom environment in Kalakshetra. Their open door policy allows anyone to tour the campus and view their classes. I highly recommend paying the school a visit if you're ever in Chennai. The environment evokes a serene state of mind. It's easy to lose yourself in the beautiful sights, against the backdrop of sounds of stomping feet mingling with the chirps of birds.
