Jatra is a popular folk theatre form of Bengali Theatre, spread throughout most of Bengali speaking areas of the Indian Subcontinent. Of the non religious forms, jatra is the most important and popular in some areas of Bangladesh and Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Orissa and Tripura. For the first time ever, I witnessed Jatra in Komdhara Village, in Hooghly region of West Bengal. The villagers who are basically farmers were the performers and are involved in quite odd professions in their daily life and does not have any professional connection with the theatre world. But, they have been doing it professionally for quite a long time. They wait for the whole year to perform in the festive seasons, during the Puja Festival. . Some portraits from the Jatra.
