I tried to get into Black Sails but found it dry, and the writing for the women was distasteful to say the least. Is there a part that the show improves, particularly when the gayness is amped up?

It’s basically universally agreed that the first season is the weakest. The second season gets 100x more sophisticated and significantly gayer.

thanks, and sure thing! the charioteer is a coming-of-age novel set in WWII england about one ginger’s attempt to reconcile the tension between gayness as an individual/private experience and gayness as a social/political identity by thirsting after two dudes at the same time. it features at least three mentions of tea, one horrible birthday party, and too much casual drunk driving to count. i also curled up in fetal position when i finished it for the first time and have read it about four more times since.
