2. Did you reread anything? What?Yes! I got an old copy of a book called I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, which is a thinly veiled-memoir about the author’s three years in a mental hospital. I read it as a teen and loved it, and loved it again this year. It’s incredibly beautiful, and hard, and filled with hope.
12. Any books that disappointed you? I read a book of Hemingway’s short stories, and while I really like his novels - at least the ones I’ve read - I didn’t care for the short stories. The longer books seem to really deconstruct the very ethos of manliness people associate with him (I mean, the hero of The Sun Also Rises is literally impotent as the result of a war injury) but the stories fell a lot more into that glamorization of violence and honor. Meh.
25. What reading goals do you have for next year? I’ll try to read 50 books, though I define books as ‘published’ so the stuff I alpha read doesn’t count. Because in my head that would be cheating. But a short story available independently isn’t cheating. Brains are weird.
