At long (very, very long) last, the next chapter of Room and Board is finished. I’m editing it tonight, and plan to post tomorrow evening.
Hallelujah.
Keep Talking ch. 7 preview
“We have to make sure this place doesn’t turn into Haven.” Jak’s voice stayed level and calm, but the words made the redhead shiver regardless.
It was almost impossible to imagine the sleepy, isolated little town becoming the bustling port of Haven, its eccentric but lovable citizens giving way to the surly, sometimes cruel inhabitants of the much larger city. But it was also impossible to deny that, in the distant future they were still straddling, that very thing had come to pass.
Daxter’s hand resumed stroking through blonde strands as soon as he realized he had paused. “Yer right. That’s definitely an important job, big guy. We’ll make sure it gets done.”
“I want to keep an eye out for Gol and Maia, too.” Jak’s voice dropped momentarily to a growl. “I know it looked like we beat them back then, but after Erol, I’m not trusting that anybody is gone for good unless I bury them myself. Those two, with more dark eco power than I’ve ever had…” It didn’t take a large stretch of the imagination to imagine them finding a way back to the surface for another round of crazy.
“Morbid imagery, but I fully appreciate the sentiment.” Daxter scratched the back of his friend’s neck lightly, a calming gesture. “Careful, babe. People are gonna start thinkin’ you’ve got a hero complex.”
“Ha. I don’t want to be a hero. My goals just usually coincide.” Jak smiled. “Do you remember what I wanted to do when I was a kid?”
“You wanted ta be an explorer,” Daxter answered immediately. “Just like yer uncle.” He could remember, as clear as if it had happened yesterday, a little boy with green hair barely starting to show blonde at the tips tromping around this very hut in his uncle’s hat and boots, unrolling the old man’s maps to study them with the utmost silent seriousness. “Aww, damn, Jak, you were adorable!”
Jak grumbled good-naturedly, ears angling down in pretend irritation as Daxter dropped a kiss between them. “Yeah, yeah. But regardless of my adorability—don’t you think it would be amazing to see the rest of the world like it is now? We can find out where Spargus and Kras might be built someday and see what’s there right now. We can find out what’s beyond that. If we could get Keira to help us design some sort of small plane—”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Slow yer roll, big guy.” Daxter laughed helplessly. “This is not the kind’a thing ya plan out in the middle of the night, sheesh.”
“I get excited. Sue me.”
“So, let me get this straight. On our to do list we have: building a house from the foundation up, preventing a dystopian future from realizing itself, bein’ watchdogs against the return of a pair of power-mad, eco-crazed siblings who want to rule the world, and mappin’ an entire continent coast ta coast. Did I forget anything?”
“Swimming, camping, fishing, and hiking in the Forbidden Jungle,” Jak supplied, grinning against slightly sunburned skin. “And whatever our friends in Haven and Spargus need our help with.”
“How about they shift their asses down here an’ give us a hand fer a change?” Dax groused, but his heart wasn’t in it. His heart was concentrated directly on his best friend in his arms.
Jak claimed he wasn’t a hero. He had been called exactly the opposite of a hero for quite some time in Haven. Kras saw nothing in him but a surprisingly talented dark horse racer, a boost to network viewer numbers and ratings. But at the core of his being, Jak was a fixer. A protector. Someone who would never stop trying to make things right for everyone around him and see justice served, bullies and oppressors put in their place.
Jak was most definitely a hero.
“I’m sure they’ll help us if we need them,” Jak was saying obliviously. “They will when we remind them how much they owe us… what are you doing?”
Dax took his lips off Jak’s forehead to answer. “I’m bein’ overwhelmed by my affection for you. Lay still an’ take it like a man.”
Ahhh, I forgot how much I loved Room and Board! <3
