Former U.S. national team player Jay DeMerit has retired from soccer. DeMerit, the first player signed by the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps in 2010 and the Major League Soccer team's first captain, officially announced his retirement Thursday. ''When it makes sense, when it's right, it's not sad,'' DeMerit said. It's something I am very proud of.'' The 34-year-old DeMerit will continue to work with the Whitecaps as an ambassador and has other business interests in Vancouver. Source: The Associated Press

A big congratulations goes out to Jay DeMerit for marrying former Olympic gold medalist Ashleigh McIvor this weekend!
The former USA regular and Vancouver Whitecaps captain tied the knot with McIvor Sunday in Whistler, B.C. -- not far from where McIvor won the first ever gold medal in women's ski cross for Canada in the 2010 Olympics.
DeMerit recorded the event with the instagram picture above, which was captioned with the phenomenal #DeMarried hashtag.

After rupturing his Achilles tendon on opening day of the MLS season, DeMerit is on the verge of making his comeback, just in time for the Whitecaps' playoff push. Hopefully, though, he's still just a couple days away so that he can enjoy a short honeymoon!
