A few years ago, if you had asked me what SU character I was most like, I probably would’ve said Peridot, or Connie. But when I started watching SU:F I realized, it was Steven. It always was. He was the first character where I didn’t simply relate to them, I saw myself in them.
Due to a lot of mental health issues I’ve struggled with, the idea of living on my own is something that is neither feasible, nor even appealing. So seeing Steven leave on his own journey was... bittersweet, yes, but it was also something I simply couldn’t see myself doing.
When the whole corrupted Steven thing was just a theory, I drew up more than a few designs for what he might look like, and what his corruption scars would look like- so, I was a bit disappointing when he didn’t have any (both for symbolic reasons and because I’m a sucker for new character designs). I unintentionally created a distinct AU just out of my incorrect predictions, but, it’s one that I’ve enjoyed a lot.
Right now, I can’t say with confidence that I am okay. But... I can say that I will be. And that’s pretty big for me. So, writing a version of Steven who’s travelling the country? That’s not something I feel I can do. But writing a version of him living in Little Homeworld, getting to know other uncorrupted Gems that can empathize with him? Now that, that I can write.
So... yeah.
