honestly i think the first jay-sun date is pretty terrible. he’s too nervous about getting it right and i’m just anxious in general. we’re both so full of false starts and half finished sentences, awkward silences stretching forever. something happens - a leaf falls into his drink, someone jostles our table with a stroller and my pastry falls on the ground - something that should be the last straw but the both of us can’t help dissolve into giggles at the absurdity of it all. how is this so hard when everything leading up to it hasn’t been? it goes much better from there once we’ve finally gotten over ourselves.

now, we’ve learned our lesson. a date isn’t supposed to outdo the last one in a competition for most perfect experience, it’s about making time to have fun together. for a while dates were kept more casual (coffee in the park, ice skating, cooking together) but now that we’ve found our footing with each other, we’re slowly working back in more formal situations with slightly higher stakes. dinners at nicer restaurants, going to family functions together, the kind of thing where seriousness enters the picture again.

The birthday boy is getting a nice, lazy lie in. I’ve called in a few favours so the other bats will cover his patrol and we’ll have all day and night to celebrate ;) I’m making French toast for brunch and I can’t keep Jason out of the kitchen long enough to stop him from trying to prep toppings. He keeps trying to take the knife from me because he thinks I’ll cut myself instead of the fruit again (it’s only happened once!) and I let him just so I can concentrate on flipping the bread back into the pan instead of onto the countertop. He doesn’t know it yet, but I’ve got two tickets to the movies in my purse for the afternoon showing at the little indie theatre, the kind where the ticket counter is the same as concession stand and there’s only one screen. We’ll get popcorn and M&Ms to share. After the credits roll, we’ll stop at the ice cream parlour on the way home and I’ll get some on his nose when I try to share a bite with him. He’ll joke about ruining our dinners and I’ll pinky promise not to tell. Today is just for the two of us, sunshine yellow and sweet. Dinner with his family later will be a little more complicated, but Alfred’s got my recipe for lemon pie to serve as dessert. My annotated copy of the Scarlet Pimpernel and a new whetstone sit wrapped at the back of our closet. I’ve saved his presents for later tonight, something to look forward to if the weight of his family becomes difficult to handle. And if I got a little something for me for his birthday, well he’ll enjoy unwrapping that gift all night.

Autumn season is when it’s finally, finally cool enough for my best outfits so i am taking him out on dates and taking tons of pictures just to appreciate how good we look together. it’s finally cool enough that holding hands and cuddling no longer equals a puddle of sweat so the sweet PDA is increasing proportionally to how cold it is

I’m making him knead the dough for the tsukimi dango because i don’t like how hard it is to get the flour off of my hands after

Apple picking! I’ve never been but we’re going and he’s going to hold the ladder steady. After, the apartment is going to smell like apples and spices for weeks as he makes pies, crisps, muffins, cakes, trying to use up the way too many apples we picked.

He drags me to the pumpkin patch multiple times not because he’s a huge pumpkin nerd but because he’s determined to figure out their secret recipe for the pumpkin donuts. The minimum wage worker who mans the till is not paid enough to deal with this shit so she just starts making him buy double the boxes just to try and keep him away for longer.

Movie nights! I’m a big fraidy cat and i don’t really like horror but if you tell me its a psychological thriller or gothic romance (and there’s not too much body horror) then i can be tricked into watching it. Cuddling up on the couch and watching Fall themed movies, maybe the occasional sort of scary one.

So much nikuman and oden, only i don’t really like fish cakes so we have to do workarounds for that. What’s left of oden without fish cakes you ask? Quite a bit actually and Jason likes coming up with non-traditional ingredients to add to the pot. The kitchen always smells good and warm in the fall, soups cooking on the stove and something sweet for dessert in the oven.

i have a question for jaysun!!! if you two were flowers, which ones would you be? what do you think jason’s favourite flower would be?

and for sunford, what do you think his primary love language would be? and which one would he be keen to receive?

ariel honey, hi!!!! my trip has gone a little off the rails because of flight delays, but i’m so hopeful the rest of it will be better. i love these questions so much!

i think jason is a red spider lily. they’re sometimes called resurrection lillies and are associated with death/graves but also seasonal change. they’re also a really pretty red which is on theme for him. i think i’d be lily of the valley. they look so pretty and delicate (and smell amazing) but they’re poisonous if you eat them. jason’s favourite flower would conceptually be heather and practically be wild daisies. he likes the concept of heather because it’s always showing up in the classic books he reads, but he doesn’t have a lot of real experience seeing them. he sees wildflowers and daisies growing through the cracks in the pavement almost daily and has a soft spot for them.

for conrad, acts of service comes really easily but he prefers to express his feelings through quality time. doing things for others is something that’s been ingrained in him to do, but when he’s more consciously choosing how he wants to love, he does it through time. time is something he’s very aware of and he’d want to spend it on what matters. he’d be very weak-kneed at receiving words of affirmation, mostly because he isn’t on the receiving end of it a lot.

miss sunnie i’m thinking about that jason and dick art and translating it to jay-sun. finding out that he didn’t know how to peel oranges for the longest time as a kid and even though he does now, you peel them for him 🥺🥺 i just always think about u guys when it comes to the intimacy and love in sharing food

🥹 darling ro, you’re going to make me blush. there’s something so intimate about feeding someone else, so caring. let me sustain you, let me nourish you. jason telling the story of the first time dick ever peeled an orange for him and deciding to do it for him from that point. telling him, “i know you’re capable of this, but let me do it for you anyway”. food being a past scarcity for jason, and now it’s a gift freely given. for jay-sun, splitting an orange or making food for each other is love. it’s not just about meeting a basic need, but all of the little unsaid emotions behind making that effort.

vanilla bean ౨ৎ what does a day off with your lover look like?

i think our days off are slow, affectionate things. sleeping in late, no alarm clocks for once. lazy kisses in bed turning into something more but equally languorous. making breakfast in the kitchen together and feeding each other bites off of our plates. heading to the farmers market hand in hand. jason ends up carrying all of our produce while i pick out flowers for the kitchen. we have dinner at a friend’s house and promise to host the next time. coming back home and collapsing into each other. his head on my lap while he reads and i knit (it’ll be a scarf for him but he doesn’t know it yet).

honeymoon ౨ৎ where did the two of you travel to for your honeymoon? and how was it?

hmmm i don’t have a specific country in mind, but i think somewhere in scandinavia in the summer would be lovely. a cottage a few miles from a town where no one knows us. staying up to see the midnight sun together curled up tight. picking cloudberries and gooseberries as they come into season and finding glacial lakes to swim in.

knee high black boots, black and grey plaid mini skirt, soft white sweater, and this beautiful purple leather jacket i thrifted. too many silver accessories.
